Austin Reaves’ frustration boiled over during the fourth quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers’ Game 2 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday, when he clashed with referee John Goble. The incident occurred at the 6:06 mark of the fourth quarter during a jump ball involving Thunder guard Cason Wallace and Reaves. Goble was overheard yelling at Reaves, which prompted the Lakers guard to respond with a profane outburst. According to The Athletic’s Joel Lorenzi, Reaves told Goble, ‘That’s some bullst for you to talk to me like that. P*y.’

Reaves Confronts the Referee Crew After the Game

Reaves’ frustration didn’t end on the court. After the game, he confronted the entire NBA referee crew, expressing his outrage over the officiating. ‘When we were doing the whole tip ball when they were switching spots, I wanted to get on the other side because they had a guy on the other side that was just trying to keep an advantage,’ Reaves explained, via Cal Post’s Khobi Price. ‘And he turned around and just yelled in my face. I just thought it was disrespectful. The whole time that was going on over there, I don’t think he said much to them. I know Ben [Taylor], I think, stepped in and said something.’

Reaves insisted he remained respectful throughout the game. ‘I had the feeling that I was the whole night respectful,’ he said. ‘I told him if I did that to him first, I would have got a tech. I feel like the only reason I didn’t get a tech is because he knew he was in the wrong. I just felt disrespected.’

Reaves’ Strong Performance Wasn’t Enough

Despite the controversy, Reaves delivered a strong performance for the Lakers, scoring 31 points and dishing out six assists on 62.5% shooting. However, his efforts were not enough to overcome the reigning NBA champions. The Lakers lost the game 125-107, and the series now moves to Los Angeles for Games 3 and 4.

After the game, Reaves was asked about the heated exchange with Goble and reiterated his stance. ‘At the end of the day, we’re grown men and I just didn’t feel like he needed to yell in my face like that,’ he said, according to TMZ. ‘I told him that. I wasn’t disrespectful.’

Reaves’ Remarks Spark Debate on Refereeing Standards

Reaves’ comments have sparked broader discussions about officiating in the NBA. He pointed out what he perceived as a double standard in the treatment of Thunder players. ‘I believe he didn’t say much to them,’ Reaves said. ‘That’s what frustrated me. I didn’t feel like he was treating me the same way he treated them.’

The situation highlights the delicate balance between player frustration and maintaining respect for officials. While Reaves’ outburst could be seen as unprofessional, his explanation reveals the subjective nature of officiating decisions and the emotions they can provoke. The NBA has yet to comment on the incident, and it remains to be seen whether any disciplinary action will follow.
