Two former Chinese defence ministers have been handed suspended death sentences on corruption charges, according to state media, a military court on Thursday sentenced Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu to death with a two-year reprieve.
Suspended Death Sentences Convert to Life Imprisonment
This means their death sentences will be commuted to life imprisonment after two years, without the possibility of sentence reduction or parole, Xinhua reports, Both men were found guilty of bribery, and all of their personal assets were confiscated.
Part of Broader Anti-Corruption Campaign
The announcement follows the recent ousting of several top military figures in the country amid a sweeping anti-corruption enforcement action, but the moves against high-ranking officials have been part of a broader effort to root out corruption within the military and government ranks.
Wei Fenghe served as defence minister from 2018 to 2023 and was replaced by Li Shangfu in March 2023; Li’s tenure as defence minister was much shorter than Wei’s. He was dismissed in October 2023. Two months after he suddenly disappeared from public life, sparking speculation of his removal.
Speculation and Timeline of Events
Li’s disappearance from public events in August 2023 led to widespread speculation about his status and potential legal issues — his removal was confirmed in October 2023, when he was officially replaced in the role. The timing of the sentencing suggests a pattern of swift action against high-profile figures accused of misconduct.
Both men were charged with bribery, and the confiscation of their personal assets is a standard practice in such cases, the sentences reflect the seriousness with which the government is addressing corruption within the military leadership.
China’s military courts have been tasked with handling corruption cases involving high-ranking officials; these trials are typically closed to the public, with limited details made available to the media. The sentences handed down in this case highlight the potential consequences for those found guilty of corruption at the highest levels.
Wei and Li’s cases are part of a long-standing campaign against corruption that has seen numerous officials at various levels of government and the military investigated and punished. The campaign has been a key focus of the current administration, with efforts to maintain discipline and integrity within the armed forces.
The sentences also expose the legal mechanisms available to the government in dealing with corruption. While the death penalty is still a possibility in China for certain crimes, it is often suspended and converted to life imprisonment after a specified period, as in this case.
