Bhopal, Feb 27 — In an unusual display of defiance, Congress MLA Babu Jandel from Sheopur performed a headstand in the Madhya Pradesh State Assembly on Friday, protesting what he claims are 15 false First Information Reports (FIRs) filed against him by the BJP-led state government. The protest took place near the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the main entrance of the Assembly building, drawing attention from both lawmakers and the public.
Allegations of Political Retaliation
Jandel accused the government of targeting him for raising issues related to farmers’ distress and public grievances. He stated that three of the 15 FIRs were filed in the past month alone. The most recent FIR, lodged on February 15, relates to an alleged incident where Jandel fired a celebratory shot in the air during a Shiv Baraat procession on Mahashivratri. Jandel maintained that the firearm used was a locally made, single-shot device not classified as a prohibited weapon.
He called for the FIR to be withdrawn, stating that the government was using legal actions to silence dissent. ‘This is not a criminal act but an act of protest against political repression,’ Jandel said during a press interaction after the protest.
Protest as a Form of Civil Disobedience
Jandel declared that he would continue his protest as a form of Satyagraha, or nonviolent resistance, until the FIRs are withdrawn. His decision to perform a headstand was symbolic, representing his commitment to his cause despite the physical strain it would entail.
Earlier in the day, during the Zero Hour of the ongoing budget session, Congress MLAs Pankaj Upadhyay and party whip Sohan Valmiki raised Jandel’s issue, highlighting the alleged misuse of legal processes against the legislator. However, after the Speaker indicated that the matter would be forwarded to the concerned department, dissatisfied Congress legislators staged a walkout from the Assembly.
Following the walkout, Jandel took his protest to the Assembly premises, where he performed the headstand in full view of the media and onlookers. The protest, while unconventional, underscored the growing tension between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress in the state.
Public Reaction and Political Implications
Observers noted that Jandel’s protest was not only a personal act of defiance but also a symbolic gesture against what some see as an increasing trend of political retaliation through legal means. Social media platforms saw a surge in posts supporting Jandel, with many users criticizing the government for allegedly using the legal system to stifle dissent.
Political analysts suggested that the incident could intensify the existing rivalry between the two major parties in Madhya Pradesh. ‘This kind of protest sends a strong message to the government and could influence public perception of the ruling party’s governance,’ said one analyst from a political think tank in Bhopal.
Jandel’s actions have also drawn comparisons to other instances of protest by legislators, such as the sit-ins and fasts by opposition lawmakers in previous years. However, the headstand, being a physically demanding act, is a unique form of protest that has not been seen in the state’s legislative history.
As of now, the state government has not officially commented on Jandel’s claims or the FIRs allegedly filed against him. The matter is reportedly under review by the concerned law enforcement department, and a decision on the FIRs is expected within the next two weeks.
Jandel has vowed to continue his protests unless the FIRs are withdrawn. ‘I will not stop until justice is served,’ he stated. His actions have become a focal point in the ongoing discourse about the role of the legal system in political conflict and the rights of legislators to voice their concerns without fear of retribution.
