HYDERABAD — Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Vem Narender Reddy, both Congress candidates, filed their nominations on Thursday for two vacant Rajya Sabha seats from Telangana. The election of these two candidates is now viewed as all but certain, with no serious opposition expected in the upcoming process.
Unopposed Race for Rajya Sabha Seats
With no other candidates contesting, Singhvi and Narender Reddy are set to be elected unopposed. Singhvi filed three sets of nomination papers, while Narender Reddy submitted four, indicating strong backing from the party. Singhvi’s current term in the Rajya Sabha is set to end on April 9, and the Congress has decided to re-nominate him for the Upper House.
The second vacancy arises from the expiration of the term of BRS member KR Suresh Reddy on April 6. The Congress has fielded Narender Reddy for this seat, further solidifying its dominance in the state’s legislative representation.
Independent candidate Kante Sayanna also filed one set of nomination papers despite not having the required number of MLAs to support his candidacy. However, his nomination is likely to be rejected during the scrutiny process on Friday. With no other candidates in the fray, the Congress nominees are set to be elected unopposed.
BRS Absence Due to MLA Defections
The BRS did not field a candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections due to a lack of required numbers in the Assembly. The party has 37 MLAs, but 10 of them are alleged to have shifted their allegiance to the Congress, severely weakening its numbers and preventing it from fielding candidates.
This development highlights the shifting political landscape in Telangana, where the Congress has gained significant ground. The defectors have reportedly joined the Congress, strengthening its position in the state legislature and making it difficult for the BRS to challenge the party in key elections.
According to party sources, the defections have been a strategic move to bolster the Congress’s representation in the Upper House. The party has not only retained Singhvi but also fielded Narender Reddy for the second seat, ensuring its continued influence in national legislative processes.
Implications for State and National Politics
The election of Singhvi and Narender Reddy is expected to have significant implications for both state and national politics. Singhvi, a prominent legal figure and former advocate, has been a key voice in the Rajya Sabha, often speaking on constitutional matters and legislative reforms.
His re-election ensures that the Congress will retain a strong legal and policy-oriented voice in the Upper House. Narender Reddy, on the other hand, brings with him experience in state-level governance, having served as a minister in the previous government.
The absence of BRS candidates also raises questions about the party’s ability to maintain its influence in the state’s legislative framework. With the Congress gaining momentum, the BRS may face challenges in reasserting its position in both state and national politics.
Analysts suggest that the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections will be closely watched, as they will determine the balance of power in the Upper House. The results could influence key legislative decisions and policy-making processes at the national level.
With the scrutiny process scheduled for Friday, the final confirmation of Singhvi and Narender Reddy’s nominations is expected soon. Their election will mark a significant step in the Congress’s efforts to consolidate its position in Telangana’s political landscape.
