UFC legend Daniel Cormier has cast doubt on Conor McGregor’s return to the Octagon following his injury at UFC 329, according to a report — After five years out of action, McGregor returned this past Saturday in the UFC 329 main event when he took on Max Holloway.
McGregor’s Comeback Ends in Disappointment
Despite the years of anticipation. His return ended in disaster as he suffered a knee injury in the opening seconds, rendering him unable to continue as Holloway went on to score the win. Cormier, a former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion, doesn’t believe McGregor will ever return to the Octagon again.
“If you ask me truthfully. I am more likely to tell you guys that it’s not gonna happen than it will happen,” Cormier said in a video on his YouTube channel. “He’s very unique and I think the whole week showed that he’s the biggest star we have and the whole week showed that.”
Questions About Fan Reception
Cormier also questioned whether fans would buy into another Conor McGregor comeback. “I just wonder if he even does try to come back once again, do people even buy into it again and say they wanna see Conor McGregor go at it one more time?” he added. “It really sucks as well, because the card itself was insane.”
Even in the lead up to his main event against ‘Blessed’, there was a different feeling in the air amongst fans. Despite that, UFC 329 still ended up breaking the record for the highest gate in UFC history, overtaking UFC 306 at the Sphere.
Future Fights and Recovery
Although Cormier is reluctant to believe we will see McGregor back in the Octagon, Holloway has already offered his foe a trilogy fight, claiming that he will wait for him to return. Despite being back on the verge of a title shot, the Hawaiian has stated that he will take the rest of the year off and would like to fight McGregor in 2027.
Whether that happens, though, depends on the extent of McGregor’s injury, which Dana White is assuming is a torn ACL, and whether there is a door open for him to return again. The outcome of McGregor’s recovery will be a key factor in determining his future in the sport.
