A Life Cut Short

Celeste Rivas Hernández was a 14-year-old daughter of first-generation Salvadoran immigrants who settled in Lake Elsinore, California. Known for her simple tastes and love of music and dance, she was a familiar presence in her community, often seen walking to the corner store for snacks and drinks, according to The New York Times and BBC.

The tragedy began in April 2024, when Celeste disappeared for the last time. Her family endured over a year of silence before the harsh reality was revealed. On September 8, 2025, her body was found in the front trunk of a Tesla registered to D4vd (David Burke), after a neighbor reported a foul odor. The vehicle had been towed from the Hollywood Hills area near Burke’s residence.

Celeste’s last known movements led to Burke’s home on April 23, 2025. According to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, that was the last time anyone saw her alive. The details of what occurred inside the home remain central to the ongoing trial.

Charges and Court Proceedings

D4vd, the 21-year-old alt-pop musician known for songs like “Romantic Homicide” and “Here with Me,” was formally charged with first-degree murder, continuous sexual acts, lewd and lascivious acts with a minor, and mutilating human remains on April 16, 2026, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman. The charges were announced at a press conference alongside LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell.

Burke has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges. His arrest came after months of mounting evidence and investigations, including a grand jury review and testimony from his parents, who were subpoenaed in February 2026. His father was asked to testify in the case, while his mother appeared before a grand jury. The defense has denied all allegations, claiming there is no evidence to support the charges.

The musician was arrested without bail and has been held in custody since. His legal team has stated he is cooperating with authorities, despite earlier reports from NBC Los Angeles indicating he was uncooperative during initial investigations.

Family’s Plea for Justice

Celeste’s family released a public statement on Tuesday, expressing their grief and gratitude to the LAPD and the DA’s office for their efforts. “We miss her deeply. All we want is justice for Celeste,” they wrote, as reported by ABC7 Los Angeles. The family also thanked the residents of Lake Elsinore for their support, describing Celeste as a “beautiful, strong girl” who loved to sing and dance.

The family attended D4vd’s first court appearance on Monday but could not provide a statement due to a canceled press conference. Celeste’s father, who had previously spoken out about the family’s anguish, described the loss as a “nightmare” and emphasized that the family’s only goal is to see justice done.

The case has shocked fans and communities, particularly in South Korea, where d4vd has a large following after performing in the country. The tragic circumstances have also raised questions about the safety of minors in the entertainment industry and the responsibilities of public figures.
