Ubisoft is marking the 25th anniversary of the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon franchise with a series of updates, giveaways, and hints at future releases. The company announced closed playtests for a new game while simultaneously rolling out a major update for Ghost Recon: Wildlands and making Ghost Recon: Future Soldier available for free through August 13, according to multiple sources.
New Ghost Recon Title in Development
According to rockpapershotgun.com, Ubisoft’s live producer Irina-Gabriela Popa described the upcoming game as a “fun, fresh experience” that will remain true to the franchise’s core elements: tactical action, large-scale operations, and credible military storytelling. The company is hosting closed tests through an insider program, part of the 25th anniversary celebrations — Popa also emphasized the return of the iconic Ghost Unit, a staple of the series.
Meanwhile, Eurogamer.de confirmed that a new mainline Ghost Recon title is in development, though no further details were disclosed at the time of the announcement.
Wildlands Gets 4K Upgrade and New Missions
Ghost Recon: Wildlands received a major free update titled Last Rites, available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and last-gen consoles, according to pcgames.de, while the update includes visual enhancements such as improved lighting, shadows, and distance rendering, with support for up to 4K resolution at 60 FPS. It also introduces a new standalone story mission set in a dark region of Bolivia, where players battle a fanatical cult led by La Llorona, a vengeful sect leader.
The update also revives a Predator-themed mission, where players face off against the iconic sci-fi creature; Players can access this mission without completing the main campaign, as confirmed by pcgames.de. In addition, players can adjust various gameplay settings, including difficulty level, enemy behavior, and weather conditions, to tailor their experience.
According to Eurogamer.de, the Xbox Series X version runs at 4K resolution, with some dynamic scaling, while the Series S version offers two modes: a 1440p quality mode and a 1080p performance mode at 60 FPS. The update is also available during a free weekend on Xbox platforms.
Free Game Giveaways and 25th Anniversary Promotions
As part of the anniversary, Ghost Recon: Wildlands and Ghost Recon: Breakpoint were available for free play from August 6 to August 10, according to PC Games Hardware. Meanwhile, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier was made free to download until August 13 via Ubisoft Connect for PC, with a permanent addition to players’ libraries if claimed before the deadline.
The 2012 title Future Soldier originally launched on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, and features a futuristic storyline with missions in locations such as Bolivia, Zambia, and Russia, according to Eurogamer.es. The free promotion is part of a broader 25th-anniversary sale offering s of up to 95% on other Ghost Recon titles.
