A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Mindanao region of the southern Philippines on June 8, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers and was also reported as 8.2 magnitude by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), but Aftershocks were felt in neighboring countries, prompting Japan to issue a tsunami alert.
Seismic Activity in Greece
Greece experienced a series of earthquakes in northern Evia on Sunday, with the strongest registering a magnitude of 5.2 according to preliminary data; the quakes were felt in Athens, though no damage was initially reported. Scientists are monitoring the area closely over the next 48 hours for potential further shocks. The mayor of Mantoudi reported landslides along the local road network, and several houses were damaged, with one wall collapsing. The Greek Seismological Society expects more quakes but not of greater magnitude.
Earthquake in the San Francisco Bay Area
A 3.6 magnitude earthquake shook the San Francisco Bay Area on Sunday morning at 8:40 a.m. The tremor was centered just south of Alamo and was felt from Vallejo to the South Bay. No injuries or damage were reported. The region has been seismically active for the past six months, with over 300 earthquakes recorded near San Ramon between November and December.
Quake Off the Coast of Hawaii
A magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred off the coast of Hawaii’s Big Island at 12:41 a.m. on Sunday. The quake was centered nearly 14 miles east-southeast of Naʻalehu at a depth of 26 km below sea level. The USGS reported that the earthquake was felt as far north as Waimea. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed no tsunami was expected, but noted that some areas may have experienced shaking. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has not yet issued a statement on the earthquake’s source.
Greece, the Philippines, and the United States are all in seismically active regions prone to frequent tremors. While the Greek and Bay Area quakes were less severe, the Indonesian earthquake’s higher magnitude and shallower depth raised concerns for potential widespread impact. Authorities in all affected areas are continuing to monitor for aftershocks and additional seismic activity.
