Surprise Honor at Cannes Film Festival
John Travolta was presented with an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, an honor often seen as the festival’s lifetime achievement award, while premiering his directorial debut, according to the BBC. The 72-year-old actor was in attendance for the premiere of Propeller One-Way Night Coach, the film he directed.
Travolta’s Emotional Reaction
Travolta was visibly moved when receiving the award, telling the audience, ‘This is beyond the Oscar.’ He added in French, ‘A complete surprise,’ as the crowd applauded. ‘I can’t believe this. This is the last thing I expected,’ he said.
Known for iconic films such as Pulp Fiction, Grease, and Saturday Night Fever, Travolta said the moment was ‘a humbling moment.’ He noted that he had been nominated for an Academy Award twice, but the honor at Cannes was particularly meaningful.
Travolta’s film, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, will premiere on Apple TV’s streaming service later this month; the movie is based on his 1997 children’s book and is set during the ‘golden age of aviation.’
Travolta wrote, directed, and co-produced the film, and also played one of the roles; his daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta, also stars in the film, adding a personal touch to the project.
Other Honorees at This Year’s Festival
The Cannes Film Festival is also recognizing Peter Jackson, the director of the Lord of the Rings series, and Barbra Streisand with honorary Palme d’Or awards at this year’s event. This is not the first time the festival has awarded surprise honors in recent years.
Travolta mentioned last year that Denzel Washington had received a similar award, and Tom Cruise was honored with one in 2022, but the practice of recognizing individuals with honorary awards continues to be a significant part of the festival’s tradition.
Travolta’s surprise award highlights the festival’s tradition of honoring those who have made significant contributions to the film industry — the event also showcases the continued influence of veteran actors and directors in the evolving area of cinema.
With this recognition, Travolta adds another milestone to his decades-long career in the entertainment industry, and his work on Propeller One-Way Night Coach demonstrates his expansion into new creative roles beyond acting.
The film’s release on Apple TV later this month will bring Travolta’s latest project to a wider audience, offering fans a glimpse into his directorial vision and storytelling abilities.
