Lamborghini has scrapped its first electric supercar, a decision made after customers showed little interest in battery-powered models. The brand, which revealed the Lanzador concept car in 2023, will not move forward with production of the electric vehicle.
Lamborghini chief executive Stephan Winkelmann said the acceptance of battery-powered supercars among the brand’s clientele was nearly nonexistent. He warned that continuing with a full EV strategy would be an ‘expensive hobby’ and ‘financially irresponsible’ to shareholders, customers, and employees.
Winkelmann noted that sports car enthusiasts had not formed a ‘specific emotional connection’ with EVs, largely due to the absence of the traditional internal combustion engine’s sound. ‘Plug-in hybrids offer the best of both worlds,’ he said, combining the agility of electric battery technology with the emotion and power of internal combustion engines.
Instead of launching the Lanzador, Lamborghini is doubling down on its hybrid program, which has been a growing success. Hybrid models offer the brand the ability to meet global emissions regulations while maintaining the high-performance driving experience its customers expect.
The Revuelto, the brand’s current hybrid flagship, is the successor to the Aventador and starts at around $987,000 plus on-road costs. Some listings have reached up to $1.2 to $1.3 million.
The Plug-in Hybrid Urus SUV, a more accessible option for buyers, starts at approximately $409,744 and goes up to over $600,000. It retains the performance of the standard Urus while offering an electric-only mode for city driving.
The Temerario Hybrid, launched last year, is likely replacing the Huracan and serves as an entry point into Lamborghini’s high-performance hybrid segment, with prices starting at around $613,885 plus on-road costs.
Hybrid variants are now available across every model in Lamborghini’s lineup. The brand has positioned itself firmly in the high-performance hybrid space, believing it to be the ‘sweet spot’ for its wealthy clientele in the near future.
