IMPHAL — Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh described BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte as a compassionate leader who devoted his life to public service after the politician’s death from injuries sustained in ethnic clashes. Valte, 61, passed away Saturday at a private hospital in Gurugram, where he had been under intensive care.

Singh posted on X that he felt profound sadness over Valte’s untimely demise. The MLA represented the Thanlon Assembly Constituency in Pherzawl district and belonged to the Zomi tribal community. ‘Pu Valte was not only a dedicated public representative but also a compassionate leader who devoted his entire life to the service of the people,’ Singh wrote.

Valte suffered serious injuries in a mob attack in Imphal’s Nagamapal area when ethnic violence erupted in May 2023. He received treatment in New Delhi for nearly two years before returning to Churachandpur with his wife in April 2024. His condition deteriorated suddenly on February 7, prompting his family to airlift him to the capital the next day.

Singh highlighted Valte’s tireless efforts to improve infrastructure, uplift communities and drive change in Manipur. The MLA earned widespread respect for his commitment to the state’s welfare and complete development, according to the chief minister. ‘His passing is an immense loss not only to his family and loved ones but also to the people of Thanlon and the entire state of Manipur,’ Singh said.

The chief minister paid his last respects in Gurugram, laying a wreath at Medanta Hospital. In a separate X post, he noted Valte’s death leaves a deep void in Manipur’s political landscape. Singh interacted with Valte’s family and extended condolences to relatives, supporters and well-wishers. ‘May the Almighty grant them strength, comfort, and courage to bear this irreparable loss,’ he added.

Valte’s political career spanned over a decade. He first won the Thanlon seat on a Congress ticket in 2012. In 2017, he secured re-election on a BJP platform and served as minister for general administration and transport, per the Manipur government website. Voters returned him to the assembly in 2022.

Singh’s tribute underscored Valte’s role as a humble figure and pillar of strength for his community amid Manipur’s ongoing ethnic tensions.
