Competition and Performance
Mortal Kombat II. The R-rated sequel to the 2021 film, saw a 67 percent drop in its second weekend, earning $13.5 million domestically and $39 million internationally for a global total of $101.2 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter and comicbook.com. The film had opened on the Mother’s Day weekend with slightly below projections, earning less than the $40–45 million range expected, but it finished fourth this weekend, behind Michael, The Devil Wears Prada 2, and Salmokji.
Meanwhile, Michael continued its dominance in South Korea, drawing 86,921 viewers on May 15 alone, according to news culture and sports kyoung-hyeong. Its cumulative audience there has now reached 264,462. The film, which covers Jackson’s rise to fame from the Jackson 5 era to the period before his legendary Bad tour, stars Jaafar Jackson, the King of Pop’s nephew.
Regional Growth in Madrid
In a separate report, the Madrid Region saw a 10 percent increase in film shoots in 2025, with 2,103 total film-related projects in the region, according to box-office.es. This marks a continued upward trend from 1,450 projects in 2024, a 32 percent increase from 2023. The region was also the filming location for three of Spain’s top box-office films in 2025: Torrente presidente, Aída y vuelta, and Abuela tremenda. International productions such as Day Drinker and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon also filmed there.
Of the 2,103 projects, 112 were feature films, 286 were short films, 198 were television series, 612 were commercials, and 241 were music videos. Madrid accounted for 70 percent of the total filming days—over 7,300 in total,while other locations accounted for the remaining 30 percent. The audiovisual industry contributed 2.6 percent to the Madrid region’s GDP, supporting more than 29,700 direct jobs.
Market Position and Audience Reception
The Devil Wears Prata 2 brought in 30,518 viewers in South Korea over the weekend, according to sports kyoung-hyeong, and has a cumulative total of 1,354,262. The film follows Miranda Priestly, the Runway editor, as she reunites with Andy and Emily in a new chapter of the fashion world. Salmokji placed third with 20,012 viewers, and Super Mario Galaxy and Project Hail Mary rounded out the top five.
Michael is distributed internationally by Universal, which reported a global cumulative total of $421.1 million as of May 16. The film’s domestic total in the U.S. is $242.8 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. With its continued success, Michael remains a standout in the summer box office season despite competition from high-profile sequels and reboots.
