New Orleans has been crowned the top U.S. city for nightlife in a new study by online gaming platform Gambulls, which evaluated factors like bar density, safety, and drink costs. The findings, shared with Travel + Leisure, reveal that the Big Easy outperformed even Las Vegas in several key metrics.

Bar Density and Affordability

The study found that New Orleans has over 52 bars per 100,000 residents, the highest among the 10 cities analyzed. These bars operate 24 hours a day, offering an extensive nightlife scene. The average cost of a drink in the city is $10, and half a share of an appetizer costs just over $6, making it an attractive destination for budget-conscious revelers.

A spokesperson for Gambulls noted in a statement that nightlife is integral to urban life, regardless of economic status. ‘There’s also a psychological aspect to it: studies show that people have higher work-life balance and life satisfaction if they always have a ‘fun budget’ planned, even a small one,’ the spokesperson said.

Pittsburgh and Las Vegas in the Running

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, came in second with 28.7 bars per 100,000 residents. The city also scored the second-highest safety rating among the cities listed, behind only Salt Lake City. In Pittsburgh, the average drink cost is also $10, and bars typically close at 2 a.m.

Las Vegas, the traditional party capital, ranked third with just over 35 bars per 100,000 residents. However, the average drink cost in Las Vegas is $12, the highest of all the cities surveyed. A half-share of an appetizer costs around $5.80, slightly lower than in New Orleans but still a notable difference.

Columbus, Ohio, and Raleigh, North Carolina, rounded out the top five cities in the study.

Methodology and Implications

The study evaluated cities based on multiple factors, including safety, bar density, closing times, average drink and food costs, and the quality of music and entertainment. Gambulls aimed to create a thorough picture of a city’s nightlife scene, considering both the quantity and affordability of options.

According to the report, New Orleans’ combination of high bar density, late-night availability, and relatively low costs makes it a top choice for travelers seeking an active nightlife experience. The city’s historic architecture and live music scene further enhance its appeal.

While Las Vegas remains a popular destination for nightlife, the study suggests that its higher drink prices may deter some visitors. Pittsburgh’s high safety score and lower drink costs could make it an attractive alternative for those looking for a more affordable and secure environment.

The findings come at a time when many Americans are reevaluating their travel habits, with a growing emphasis on value and experiences over traditional tourist hotspots. The report highlights the importance of understanding not just the availability of nightlife, but also its cost and safety.

Analysts suggest that the results could influence how travelers choose destinations, with a potential shift toward cities that offer a better balance of affordability, safety, and entertainment options. The study also highlights the role of local culture and infrastructure in shaping a city’s nightlife reputation.

As the travel industry continues to evolve, cities like New Orleans, Pittsburgh, and others in the top rankings may see increased investment in their nightlife sectors, aiming to capitalize on their competitive advantages.
