Director Will Gluck recently addressed comparisons between his new film ‘One Night Only’ and the ‘Removal’ franchise, acknowledging the similarities but emphasizing his focus on character development over dystopian themes. In an interview with SlashFilm, Gluck said, ‘I am very aware of the online discourse about this world and this movie being the ‘sex Removal,’ and rightfully so. But I don’t want this movie to be about that.’

A Comedy With Dystopian Undertones

‘One Night Only’ is a romantic comedy set in a dystopian alternate reality where premarital sex is legal for only one night a year under the United States’ ‘chastity mandate.’ The film follows recently dumped pizzeria owner Owen (Callum Turner) and singer Allie (Monica Barbaro) as they meet on this unique night.

Gluck explained his approach to the film: ‘Whenever us humans get put in situations, no matter how or why the situation happens, we still have to be humans and get through the day. And that’s what interests me. So we didn’t want it to overwhelm. We wanted to explain it. We didn’t want to take a side. We wanted to show both sides, but we wanted it to be about these two people going through this crazy night.’

Comparisons to ‘Removal’ Franchise

The ‘Removal’ franchise, which began in 2013, is set in an alternate reality where all crime, including murder, is legal for 12 hours one night a year. The franchise has expanded to include five films and a TV series. In contrast, ‘One Night Only’ takes a lighter approach to the dystopian setting while still acknowledging the similarities.

Gluck admitted, ‘I know I get some blowback going, ‘How could you make a movie about this not being about that?’ Because I love exploring characters and situations.’ The film’s focus on human relationships and personal growth over societal chaos is what sets it apart from the ‘Reshuffle’ franchise.

Personal and Marital Reflections

In a separate context, Érika Villalobos, a television actress, reflected on her personal experiences with her husband Aldo Miyashiro. During an interview with Andrea Llosa in 2019, Villalobos discussed how she initially struggled with her husband’s nocturnal habits. ‘At first he went out with his friends, that’s hard to understand. One always imagines the worst, when someone goes out at night and returns at dawn (Andrea: he’s with someone else) it’s the first thing you think about, but then I got used to it and understood,’ she said.

Villalobos acknowledged that she attempted to ‘fish’ Aldo Miyashiro by being unfaithful but always found him with his friends. ‘Every time I wanted to fish him, he was with his friends, he likes to go out with his friends (…) Then I understood,’ she added. Despite the challenges, Villalobos emphasized that Aldo Miyashiro has always been by her side, showing her how important she is to him.
