Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address a large public meeting in Madurai on March 1, as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) gears up for a major political event in Tamil Nadu. Union Minister L Murugan confirmed the plans, highlighting that the event will bring together all NDA alliance partners, including AIADMK and PMK leaders, for a significant political demonstration.
Madurai Rally: A Political Showpiece
The rally in Madurai is expected to draw large crowds from across southern Tamil Nadu, echoing the massive gathering held on January 23 in Kerala. Murugan emphasized the strategic importance of the event, noting that Madurai is a historic and politically significant city in the state.
“Madurai is always a very important place for Tamil Nadu politics, Tamil Nadu history. So in Tamil Nadu, we are all ready to welcome our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji,” Murugan said in an interview with ANI.
The event will see the participation of key NDA figures, including AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami, PMK’s Anbumani Ramadoss, Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam’s TTV Dhinakaran, and GK Vasan, among others. This indicates a unified front from the NDA alliance in the lead-up to the 2026 state elections.
PM Modi’s Southern India Itinerary
Modi’s visit to Tamil Nadu is part of a broader southern India tour. He will arrive in Chennai on the night of February 28 and stay overnight at the Governor’s residence. Elaborate security and administrative arrangements have been put in place for his visit to the city.
On the morning of March 1, the Prime Minister will travel to Puducherry, where he is scheduled to participate in a public programme and address a large gathering. The event will focus on developmental initiatives and government welfare schemes, with participation from local leaders, officials, and party workers.
Following Puducherry, Modi will proceed to Madurai, where he will visit the Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple. The temple, one of the six sacred abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan, has recently been in the spotlight due to the Karthigai Deepam-related issue, which had drawn public and administrative attention.
After offering prayers and having darshan at the temple, Modi will address a grand public meeting in Madurai. The rally is expected to witness a large turnout from across southern districts, with leaders and supporters gathering to hear the Prime Minister’s address.
Political Significance of the Tour
Modi’s tour is expected to reinforce outreach efforts in the southern region, highlighting cultural heritage, infrastructure growth, and public welfare initiatives. The visit also serves as a strategic move to bolster the NDA’s presence in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2026 state elections.
The 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly will go to the polls in the first half of 2026. The MK Stalin-led alliance is expected to project the ‘Dravidian Model 2.0’ as a counter to the BJP-AIADMK alliance. The entry of actor-turned-politician Vijay with his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is expected to turn the polls into a three-way contest.
In the 2021 polls, the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) won 159 seats, with 133 seats in the 2021 Assembly polls. Congress won 18, PMK won five, VCK won four, and others, including independents, won eight seats. The SPA, led by DMK, which consisted of Congress, won 159 seats collectively. While the NDA won 75 seats, the AIADMK emerged as the largest party in the alliance with 66 seats.
Modi’s visit to Madurai comes at a critical time, with the NDA looking to strengthen its political base in the state. The rally is expected to serve as a unifying platform for the alliance, highlighting their development agenda and political strategy ahead of the 2026 elections.
