Izuka Hoyle and Tahar Rahim spent three months handcuffed together for Sky’s new thriller, Prisoner, a six-part series that follows a principled transport officer and a high-value inmate forced to escape an ambush while physically linked. The series, created by Hostage writer Matt Charman, combines action, moral dilemmas, and psychological tension as the pair handle a high-stakes escape through Wales; According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hoyle praised Rahim as one of her best scene partners, noting their instant chemistry and the physicality of the role.
Handcuffed Escapade and Plot Details
The plot centers on Amber Todd (Hoyle), a prison transport officer returning to work after maternity leave. She is tasked with escorting Tibor Stone (Rahim), a trained killer and high-value inmate, to court to testify against his former crime syndicate. However, their convoy is ambushed, leaving them as the only survivors. According to Radio Times, the two are forced to work together while handcuffed, dodging bullets, swimming, and eliminating threats—all while questioning their morals and trust in each other.
“I think what got me most excited was the handcuff business,” Hoyle told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s the concept of these two very different people handcuffed together, put through their paces, given the same objective, and how the story changes from a cat-and-mouse format to a psychological drama about what that does to two people, specifically Amber.” The physical demands of the role led to the use of stunt professionals, to Hoyle’s slight disappointment.
Cast and Production Insights
The cast includes Eddie Marsan as Alex Tebbit, Laurie Davidson as Declan Dempsey, and Catherine McCormack as Josephine Campbell, among others. According to fernsehserien.de, the series also features Leonie Benesch, Finn Bennett, Sam Troughton, and Ken Nwosu. Tahar Rahim, known for A Prophet and The Serpent, plays Tibor, a character defined by his calculated violence and moral detachment.
Hoyle, who has appeared in Big Boys, Boiling Point, Ludwig, and The Responder, portrays Amber as a strong-willed character whose maternal instincts and moral code are tested throughout the series. “She’s always been very strong-willed and determined, but soon her sense of morality is brought into question as her world gets turned upside down,” Radio Times reported.
International Recognition and Premiere
The series is set to premiere in the U.K. on April 30, 2025. Prisoner is part of Sky’s slate of new thrillers, following the success of other productions.
