FX has ordered the limited series “Legends,” reuniting most of the main cast from the hit outlaw biker drama “Sons of Anarchy,” according to Variety and Deadline. The series will star Charlie Hunnam (Jax), Ron Perlman (Clay), Katey Sagal (Gemma), Maggie Siff (Tara), Mark Boone Junior (Bobby), Tommy Flanagan (Chibs), Kim Coates (Tig), and Theo Rossi (Juice).
Blurring the Line Between Life and Art
According to the logline, “Legends” follows the “Sons of Anarchy” cast as they reunite at a fan convention after more than a decade. The line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood faces a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they encountered in the original show, as reported by Variety and Consequence of Sound.
Charlie Hunnam developed the series with Jonathan Groff and will serve as an executive producer alongside Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn; Hunnam will also star in the series, which is produced by FX Productions and 20th Television.
A New Adventure for the Original Cast
“When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision,” said Nick Grad, FX Entertainment president. “Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer, and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know,” according to Variety.
Many of the original cast members have maintained close relationships and regularly reunite at fan conventions, according to Deadline. “Sons of Anarchy,” which ran for seven seasons from 2008 to 2014, was a major early hit for FX as the network expanded into original scripted dramas nearly 20 years ago.
Meta-Style Reunion
The new series will see the actors playing themselves, handling a real-world threat that tests their camaraderie and legacy. According to Consequence of Sound, this meta approach allows for a fresh take on the original show without the need to bring back characters who did not survive the original series.
Rob Mac, who also served as an executive producer, previously worked on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Jonathan Groff will serve as showrunner for the series. Hunnam recently received an Emmy nomination for his role in “Monster: The Ed Gein Story,” according to Consequence of Sound.
“Legends” marks a new chapter for the “Sons of Anarchy” cast and offers a unique storytelling angle that builds on the original show’s legacy, as Additional casting for the series will be announced at a later date.
