Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the beloved 2003 role-playing game, is still in development despite five years of delays and uncertainty, according to Saber Interactive’s Chief Creative Officer, Tim Willits. Speaking to IGN, Willits confirmed the project is “still in development,” though he offered no further details on its current status or expected release date.
Project Still Afloat Amid Rumors Of Cancellation
Since its initial announcement in 2019, the remake of Knights of the Old Republic has faced persistent rumors of cancellation, with no major updates or progress reported in the intervening years. Fans have long questioned whether Aspyr, which was originally tasked with the remake under the parent company Saber Interactive, would ever deliver the project.
According to Willits, the project has not been canceled, but he stopped short of offering any new details. “Yes, it is still in development. That’s all I can say,” he told IGN, leaving many questions unanswered.
IGN also reported that Aspyr is no longer in charge of the remake. The duties have reportedly been transferred to Mad Head Games, a smaller studio known for its work on niche and retro-style games. While the change in leadership may raise concerns among fans, it could also indicate that the project is moving forward with a new team and potentially a fresh approach.
Plans For KOTOR 2 Also In Discussion
Lucasfilm Games Vice President Douglas Reilly has previously hinted at plans for a remake of Knights of the Old Republic II, according to a report. Reilly described the project under the codename “Juliet” as a full remake of KOTOR II with updated art, gameplay, and modern hardware support, while preserving the original story and characters.
Reilly’s comments suggest that Lucasfilm is seriously considering expanding the KOTOR franchise with new remakes, potentially creating a new wave of Star Wars gaming content. However, no official announcement has been made regarding the status of KOTOR II, and it remains unclear whether the project is still active.
The original Knights of the Old Republic, released in 2003, is widely regarded as one of BioWare’s best games. It captured the essence of the Star Wars universe and the “Old Republic” era, which has not been explored extensively in other media. The game’s success led to the release of Knights of the Old Republic II in 2005, though it was met with more mixed reactions.
New Star Wars Games In Development
Even if the KOTOR remake eventually sees release, fans may have to wait for other Star Wars games to come first. Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a new game described as a “spiritual successor” to KOTOR, was announced last year and is currently in early development. The project is led by Casey Hudson, a veteran of BioWare who was involved in the original KOTOR games.
According to industry analysts, the Star Wars franchise is experiencing a renaissance in the gaming space, with multiple studios working on new projects that aim to honor the legacy of the original games while introducing fresh ideas. This period of growth is particularly significant for long-time fans who have been waiting for new content that captures the spirit of the classic KOTOR series.
Regardless of which game comes first, the continued development of Star Wars-related projects indicates a strong interest in expanding the franchise beyond its cinematic roots. With multiple titles in the pipeline, the coming years could bring a wealth of new Star Wars experiences to gamers worldwide.
