Mel Schilling, a beloved figure on the reality TV show Married at First Sight (Mafs), has passed away at the age of 54 after a two-year battle with cancer. Her death, announced by her husband Gareth, has sparked an outpouring of tributes from fellow cast members, fans, and colleagues who describe her as ‘a truly magical woman’ and ‘a radiant, shining light.’
Final Days and Lasting Impact
Schilling, who starred on Mafs in both Australia and the UK, died on Tuesday. Her husband shared a heartfelt message, stating that she ‘passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love.’ He described her as ‘the matriarch of Mafs and queen of reality TV,’ but to her children and him, she was ‘an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate.’
Gareth wrote that Schilling used ‘all of her remaining strength’ in her final moments to whisper a message for her daughter Maddie and him, a message that would ‘sustain me for the rest of my life.’ He added that even in her final hours, her only thoughts were for her family.
‘This is a woman who became a new mum and a TV star at 42 – and nailed both,’ he wrote. ‘This is a woman who, through two years of chemotherapy, when she could barely lift her head from the pillow, never complained and never stopped showing courage, grace, compassion, and empathy, and never missed a day of filming.’
A Legacy of Love and Courage
Schilling’s co-star and fellow Mafs UK relationship expert Charlene Douglas said she spent time with Schilling in her final days and would ‘forever treasure the laughter, the memories and love we had for each other.’ She described Schilling as ‘a radiant, shining light’ and expressed how much she will miss dancing to Beyoncé with her.
Australian co-star John Aiken said it was ‘not fair that my partner in crime is gone.’ He called her ‘one of the good ones’ and said he ‘wanted to sit on our couch together forever.’ He added that he was ‘heartbroken, devastated and finding it hard to breathe.’
Aiken described Schilling as ‘warm, supportive and honest,’ and said she ‘deeply cared about all our participants.’ He said she had ‘remarkable skills’ and ‘truly believed in the experiment.’
Others paying tribute included author Elizabeth Day, who hosted the How To Date podcast with Schilling. She wrote, ‘What a woman. What a radiant, shining light.’ She thanked Schilling’s husband and daughter for being ‘the loves of her life.’
Impact on Relationships and Lives
Some of the couples who found love on Mafs have credited Schilling for their relationships. Tayah Aveling, who met her husband Adam on the show, said she doesn’t think they would be together if it wasn’t for Schilling. She said she played a ‘massive part in putting us together.’
Adam added that there are ‘probably a lot of people out there that credit her as well for being together.’ He said she ‘affected a lot of people’s lives.’
Mafs Australia’s Michael Brunelli, who has just had a second baby with the wife he met on the show, said, ‘Rest in peace Mel. Thank you for everything you did for Martha and I. We’ll talk about you when our kids ask how we met.’
TV personality Jay Howard, who appeared on Mafs in 2023, wrote, ‘I have no words, our hearts are broken. Rest in peace Mel – thinking about your family at this difficult time.’
Former Mafs bride April Banbury said it was ‘so heartbreaking,’ and Schilling ‘will always be remembered for the amazing strong woman she was.’
Ella Morgan, the first openly trans contestant on UK Mafs, said there were ‘not enough words to describe how brave, resilient, beautiful, inspiring and iconic you are.’ She added that Schilling ‘changed so many people’s lives, inspired so many, taught so many, loved so many, and for that we are all grateful.’
Schilling revealed her illness in 2023 after experiencing severe stomach cramps and being diagnosed with colon cancer. She underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy while still filming Married At First Sight.
On 12 March this year, Schilling said the cancer had spread and that doctors had told her ‘there is nothing further they can do.’ She wrote at the time, ‘My light is starting to fade – and quickly.’
Her death has left a profound impact on the Mafs community and fans worldwide. Tributes continue to pour in, with many describing her as a ‘truly magical woman’ and a ‘radiant, shining light.’ Her legacy will live on through the lives she touched and the love she shared.
