Two women have been charged with abduction and assault after a two-year-old boy was taken from his mother in Winnipeg, triggering an Amber Alert. The incident unfolded on Friday, with the child’s biological mother reportedly assaulted during the confrontation.
Abduction and Charges
A 30-year-old and a 25-year-old woman were arrested at a strip near McPhillips Street and Logan Avenue around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, approximately 30 minutes after an Amber Alert was broadcast across Manitoba. Winnipeg police confirmed the pair now face multiple charges, including the abduction of a person under 14 years of age.
The incident began around 10 a.m., following a dispute between the child’s biological mother and the two suspects. According to police, the mother was assaulted, and the child was taken to the suspects’ home. The two women then traveled to the McPhillips Street and Logan Avenue area in a taxi.
A concerned citizen, who had seen the Amber Alert, intervened and took the child away from the suspects, bringing him to their vehicle for safety while waiting for police to arrive. Witnesses told CBC News that first responders were seen tending to the boy inside a Pizza Pizza restaurant near the intersection where he was found.
Police Response and Child’s Condition
Police confirmed the two-year-old was taken to the hospital with no injuries as a result of the incident. Const. Stephen Spencer stated in a news conference on Friday that the swift recovery of the child demonstrates the effectiveness of the Amber Alert system.
During the arrest, police seized a personal amount of methamphetamine from one of the women. Both suspects were charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon. The 30-year-old was also charged with failing to comply with a probation order.
The 25-year-old woman faces additional charges, including carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a prohibited device or ammunition, alleged non-compliance with a conditional sentence order, and possession of a scheduled substance.
Implications and Legal Next Steps
The case has raised concerns about child safety and the legal consequences for those who commit violent crimes against minors. The suspects are currently in police custody, and their next court appearances are pending. Legal experts suggest the charges could lead to significant prison sentences, given the severity of the alleged offenses.
Police have not yet released the names of the suspects or the mother, but the incident has drawn attention to the role of Amber Alerts in quickly locating missing children. The case is also being reviewed by local authorities to assess whether additional measures are needed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Authorities have emphasized the importance of community involvement in such cases, noting that the quick action by a concerned citizen played a crucial role in ensuring the child’s safety. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers faced by families during domestic disputes and the need for swift police intervention.
