Residents Displaced and Fear for the Future

Valeria Bondaruk, a resident who moved to Kyiv from southern Ukraine after her home was bombed, was displaced once again — she described how a shard of glass embedded in her bedroom wall showed how close she came to danger. She and her daughter spent the night in a hallway, as they lack a bomb shelter; Bondaruk told the BBC that she is now considering leaving Ukraine due to fears for her 13-year-old daughter’s future.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko assessed the damage in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district, where emergency workers sifted through rubble and residents stood outside destroyed homes, but he told the BBC that Ukraine needs “ammunition, anti-missile systems – we need support from our partners.”

Ukraine’s Defense Shortcomings Highlighted

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attributed the deaths to a lack of air defense missiles, stating that Kyiv relies on western allies to supply them, as the Ukrainian Air Force reported that none of the Russian ballistic missiles used in the overnight attack were intercepted.

Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Goncharenko told the BBC that Ukraine is “absolutely unprotected” from ballistic missile attacks and “can’t do anything” without interceptors; he added that Russia is using these attacks to destroy infrastructure and that it is “very painful” for Ukraine to lose lives without defensive capabilities.

Zelensky wrote on Telegram that “as long as Ukraine does not have enough anti-ballistics, Russia will not seriously think about peace.” He emphasized that the interceptors for the Patriots have not yet been replaced and that each missile is needed daily to protect civilians.

Broader Regional Impact and Escalating Attacks

The overnight attack involved around 20 Russian missiles, which cut power to thousands of properties in the Kyiv region, plunging parts of the city into darkness. A day of mourning was declared on Friday for those killed; a local school in the Solomyanski district had its windows destroyed and its playing fields covered in debris.

Elsewhere in the Kyiv region, an attack in the Brovary and Boryspil districts killed one person and wounded seven; In Donetsk Oblast, one person was killed and 11 injured, according to a local official. The Russian defense ministry claimed it used air, land, and sea-based weapons to target military facilities and warehouses.

Ukraine has relied on American supplies of Patriot interceptor missiles to counter Russian strikes, but the U.S. has used much of its stockpile during the war in the Middle East and has been supplying Ukraine with less. Zelensky’s renewed plea for military aid came as he faces political challenges, including from former defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who has accused the government of corruption and called for an election.

In recent weeks, both sides have carried out massive air strikes, resulting in dozens of deaths — Ukraine has also targeted Russian territory, including Moscow, with a wave of 600 drones over the weekend. Two separate attacks on Russia this week killed at least 16 people, including one child.

Ukraine’s defense ministry stated that the latest attacks on Wildberries, a major Russian online retailer, have disabled seven out of 10 of the company’s logistics centers. Despite the ongoing attacks and vulnerabilities on both sides, there has been little progress in diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire. Both sides continue to accuse each other of targeting civilians.
