The remains of at least 50 infants and six adults have been found dumped at a graveyard in Trinidad and Tobago, according to the country’s police service (TTPS). The discovery was made in the town of Cumuto, approximately 40km (25 miles) from the capital Port of Spain on Trinidad, one of the two islands forming the Caribbean nation.
Preliminary Findings and Investigation
A preliminary investigation suggests the case may involve an ‘unlawful disposal of unclaimed corpses,’ according to a TTPS statement. The police have not yet confirmed whether the incident is connected to gang violence, which has contributed to one of the highest murder rates in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Among the six adults, five had identification tags, while two showed signs of having undergone post-mortem examinations — the TTPS has launched an investigation to determine the cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the dumping of the bodies.
Police Response and Accountability
Police commissioner Allister Guevarro described the discovery as ‘deeply troubling’ and stated that any individual or institution found to have violated their duty will be held fully accountable. The TTPS is working closely with local authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.
A state of emergency, which grants police extended powers of search and arrest, was renewed after being introduced on 2 March, but this measure was taken in response to the country’s high crime rates and the risk of terrorism.
Travel Advisories and Crime Trends
The US state department has issued several travel advisories for Trinidad and Tobago, citing concerns over crime and a heightened risk of terrorism. Despite a significant drop in violent crime since 2024 due to security efforts initiated during the previous state of emergencies, crime remains a persistent challenge across the country.
Local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity; the TTPS has not yet provided further details about the ongoing investigation or the identities of the individuals involved.
The discovery of the bodies has sparked concern among the public, with many questioning the safety of the country and the effectiveness of current security measures. The police have assured the public that they are taking the matter seriously and are committed to uncovering the truth.
Residents of Cumuto have expressed shock and disbelief at the discovery, with some calling for increased police presence in the area; the community is awaiting further updates from the TTPS as the investigation continues.
The incident has also drawn attention from human rights organizations, who have called for transparency and accountability in the handling of such cases — they have emphasized the need for a thorough and impartial investigation to ensure justice for the victims and their families.
As the investigation progresses. The TTPS has requested the public’s cooperation in providing any information that could help in identifying the individuals and determining the cause of death, but they have also urged families of the missing to come forward with any details that might assist in the investigation.
