The Atlanta Hawks are commemorating one of the city’s most legendary cultural landmarks with a unique promotional campaign ahead of their March 16 matchup against the Orlando Magic. As part of the initiative, the team has partnered with the historic Magic City strip club, known for its influence on Atlanta’s music and entertainment scene, to release a limited-edition hoodie and host exclusive in-game experiences.
A Limited-Edition Tribute
The Hawks Shop has launched a custom hoodie in collaboration with Magic City, featuring the club’s name in bold, peach-colored letters on the front and Hawks and Peach logos on the sleeves. The hoodie will be available only at the Hawks Shop in the State Farm Arena and online at HawksShop.com starting Monday, March 16. This is the first time the team has created merchandise directly tied to a local nightlife institution.
According to the Hawks’ official statement, the collaboration aims to highlight the club’s role in Atlanta’s cultural landscape. ‘Magic City is a cornerstone of our city’s entertainment history, and we’re proud to honor its legacy,’ a team spokesperson said.
A Full Game Experience
The tribute extends beyond merchandise. During the game, fans can expect a custom halftime show featuring T.I., a legendary Atlanta rapper and frequent Magic City patron. T.I. will perform some of his most iconic tracks, adding to the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
Food will also play a role in the celebration. Magic City Kitchen, the club’s affiliated restaurant, will serve two special versions of its renowned lemon pepper wings. One, named after former Hawks player Lou Williams, will be called ‘Louwill Lemon Pepper BBQ,’ while the other will be the traditional ‘Lemon Pepper.’
The team is also inviting fans to an early entry event featuring a live recording of the Hawks AF Podcast. The episode will include discussions about the Magic City documentary and its impact on Atlanta’s music, sports, and culture. Magic City founder Michael ‘Mr. Magic’ Barney, T.I., and Atlanta personality D.C. Young Fly will be in attendance.
A Legacy of Influence
Magic City, founded in 1985 by Michael ‘Mr. Magic’ Barney, has become a cultural institution in Atlanta. Barney, who moved to the city from Camden, N.J., was inspired to open the club after attending a similar venue with friends. Over the years, Magic City has become synonymous with Monday nights, with the phrase ‘Magic City Monday’ gaining national recognition.
The club has played a key role in shaping the careers of numerous musicians, including rappers such as Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Drake, Future, and the Migos. It has also been featured in songs such as ‘Magic City Monday’ by Jeezy and ‘Magic’ by Future.
Despite a 1995 fire that led to Barney’s incarceration, the club has endured and continues to thrive. It was also the subject of a five-part STARZ docuseries, ‘Magic City: An American Fantasy,’ produced by Hawks’ Principal Owner Jami Gertz.
During the pandemic, Magic City remained a cultural touchpoint, with notable appearances by athletes and celebrities. Former NBA player Kendrick Perkins expressed mixed feelings about the club’s reputation, citing his own past attendance.
The celebration of Magic City by the Hawks reflects a broader effort to honor Atlanta’s rich cultural history. The team’s decision to integrate the club’s legacy into their game day experience highlights the deep connection between sports and local entertainment in the city.
As the collaboration unfolds, fans are expected to experience a unique blend of music, food, and merchandise that captures the essence of Atlanta’s nightlife. The event is not only a tribute to a historic club but also a celebration of the city’s enduring cultural influence.
