Barcelona has canceled its tribute to the eight players on its squad who helped Spain win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, citing recent tensions involving fans displaying the pro-independence estelada flag. The club was set to honor its World Cup stars before a home opener against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, but instead, a fan-organized event supporting the estelada flag took place at Camp Nou. Approximately 10,000 small estelada flags were distributed to supporters before the match, and large flags and banners were also displayed in the stands.

Incident prompts decision

The decision to cancel the tribute came after a fan’s estelada flag was confiscated by police during a match at Elche last weekend. The fan reportedly confronted the officers, who responded with batons and detained him. Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirmed the club would not proceed with the tribute in the current climate. ‘The ceremony to honour the world champions will not take place,’ Laporta said. ‘It will not take place because it is not being held in the most appropriate context.’ He added that the Royal Spanish Football Federation understood the decision.

Fans rally for regional identity

Before the match, thousands of fans reportedly marched near Camp Nou with estelada flags, according to local media. The estelada is a symbol of Catalan independence and has long been a point of contention in Spain, where displaying it in public can lead to police intervention. Laporta defended the fans’ right to express their identity through the flag, stating, ‘The Estelada represents the mindset of many Barca supporters and Catalans. It is part of freedom of expression.’

Broader context of fan rights

Other top Spanish clubs had already honored their World Cup-winning players with events that included the display of the World Cup trophy and the presence of Spain’s national team coach, Luis de la Fuente. Barcelona, which has the most World Cup winners of any club in Spain, had planned a similar tribute. However, the club has now shifted focus to fan-led initiatives. The club and fan groups have criticized the heavy-handed response by authorities in recent matches, calling for greater respect for fan expression and regional identity.
