Britney Spears is reportedly leaning on her sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, after her recent arrest on a DUI charge, according to her representative, who called the incident ‘completely inexcusable.’ The representative said Spears is ‘going to take the right steps and comply with the law’ and that her sons will be spending time with her during this difficult period.

Legal Proceedings and Public Reaction

Spears was arrested on March 4 in Ventura County, California, by the California Highway Patrol at 9:28 p.m. local time. According to jail records obtained by TMZ, she was booked at 3:02 a.m. and released around 6 a.m. She is set to appear in court at Ventura County Superior Court on May 4.

Spears shares Sean Preston and Jayden James with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, whom she divorced in 2007 after three years of marriage. Before Spears’ representative confirmed that she was in contact with her sons, Federline claimed in his 2025 book, You Thought You Knew, that Spears and her children were no longer speaking.

Family Dynamics and Emotional Strain

In the book, Federline alleged that Spears’ visits with her sons became ‘less frequent, then stopped altogether’ because the boys were ’emotionally drained’ by the dynamic. He also wrote about an alleged incident when the boys were young, where Spears was found standing in the doorway with a knife in her hand.

A source confirmed to NewsNation in November 2025 that Spears and her sons were not in contact. ‘As of now, she’s not talking to anyone,’ the insider said. ‘The boys are very worried about their mom, but there’s not much they can do.’ The source added that Spears was in a ‘very dark’ place at the time.

In response to Federline, Spears shared a statement on X, where she described her relationship with her sons as ‘complex.’ ‘I have always pleaded and screamed to have a life with my boys,’ she wrote. ‘Relationships with teenage boys is complex. I have felt demoralized by this situation and have always asked and almost begged for them to be a part of my life.’

She continued, ‘Sadly, they have always witnessed the lack of respect shown by [their] own father for me. They need to take responsibility for themselves. With one son only seeing me for 45 min in the past 5 years and the other with only 4 visits in the past 5 years. I have pride too. From now on I will let them know when I am available.’

Financial Considerations and Lifestyle

Less than a month before her arrest, news broke that Spears had sold her music catalogue for a rumored $200 million. A source told The Daily Mail in February 2026 that the sale was due to financial ‘suffering’ caused by Spears’ alleged ‘heavy spending.’

‘Everyone has to be realistic with Britney’s future, including herself, so selling her catalog was wise because she isn’t going to get back into music,’ the insider said. ‘Without her Vegas shows, she is really suffering. Those shows made her a fortune, but that ended years ago, sadly.’

The source continued, ‘The best thing for her is to go back to Vegas to perform again and have a steady paycheck, but I don’t think she wants to work that hard.’ Another source, however, denied Spears had any money problems. ‘Britney is not low on money, it’s just a good time to sell her catalog because the marketplace is hot at the moment. It’s more about streaming rights,’ the source said.

‘By selling her catalog now, she makes more money on streaming,’ the source added. ‘Britney has plenty of money, but since she doesn’t do music anymore, since she doesn’t tour anymore or have a residency, there are only certain money-making ventures coming in, like her perfume line or her book.’

The source added that Spears still ‘needs to bring in money’ due to her spending habits and frequent travel. ‘Britney spends like crazy, she does not have any limits, she is always traveling and buying new clothes, and she has a large staff to pay,’ the insider said.
