PHNOM PENH — Cambodia’s trade with France reached $58 million in January, a 14.9% increase from the previous year, according to figures released by the General Department of Customs and Excise.
Cambodian shipments to France totaled $46 million, up 12.7%. Imports from the European nation hit $12 million, surging 23.9%. The numbers highlight strong demand despite shaky global markets.
Garments, footwear, travel goods and agricultural products led Cambodia’s exports. France sent pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, machinery and luxury consumer items in return.
France ranks among Cambodia’s top EU trading partners. Phnom Penh pushes to expand export markets and draw European cash into agro-processing, renewable energy and infrastructure projects.
Analysts point to steady demand and rising business optimism. Longstanding diplomatic ties, stretching back decades, bolster the link. Officials from both countries pledged deeper economic ties recently. They aim to unlock fresh trade and investment paths by 2026.
The January uptick follows a pattern of growth. Cambodia exported $1.2 billion worth of goods to the EU last year, with France taking a solid share. Garment factories in Phnom Penh and nearby provinces churn out much of the volume, employing hundreds of thousands.
Imports from France support local industries. Pharmaceuticals fill hospital shelves. Machinery powers factories. Cosmetics and high-end goods appeal to urban consumers.
Government officials credit free trade agreements and diplomatic outreach. Cambodia joined the EU’s Everything But Arms program years ago, easing access to European shelves. Recent visits by French business delegations have sparked deals in energy and farming.
Challenges linger. Global inflation and shipping delays tested ties last year. Yet January’s data suggests recovery. The GDCE report notes faster customs clearance helped boost volumes.
Looking ahead, both sides eye expansion. French firms scout opportunities in solar farms and food processing plants. Cambodian exporters target niche markets like organic rice and eco-friendly leather goods.
Economic ties build on history. France aided Cambodia’s reconstruction after the Khmer Rouge era. Today, that support evolves into mutual trade gains.
Trade ministry spokespeople call the figures encouraging. They predict steady climbs through 2024, barring major disruptions. French embassy staff in Phnom Penh echo the optimism, citing joint ventures as key drivers.
