A jury in the U.S. reached a verdict in the murder trial of Carmelo Anthony, now 19, over the 2025 death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. The verdict was reached less than three hours after deliberations began and will be read after 3 p.m. ET in the Collin County courthouse in Dallas, according to ucvradio.pe.
Legal Claims and Racial Tensions
Anthony claimed he acted in self-defense when he stabbed Metcalf with a knife during a heated argument at a high school track event in Frisco in April 2025. The case sparked national debate and racial tensions, according to the report.
District Attorney Bill Wirsky rejected Anthony’s self-defense claim, stating, “It’s not about the motivation—it’s about the mindset. He brought a knife to a track event.” Wirsky added, “He could have left the store at any time. He didn’t. He didn’t leave the encounter.”
Anthony’s defense attorney, Mike Howard, argued that Metcalf had “no legal right to touch Carmelo.” Howard noted that Texas law does not require a person to wait until being struck before defending themselves.
Investing in AI-Driven Sports Content
Meanwhile, Anthony has turned his attention to the future of sports storytelling through a partnership with Utopai Studios. Through his production company, Creative 7 Productions, Anthony is investing in Utopai to develop original intellectual property using PAI, an AI platform that transforms athletes’ real-life stories into film, TV, and streaming projects, according to Foro3D and Foro3D (kor).
Utopai Studios uses PAI as a creative engine, converting athlete careers, anecdotes, and statistics into production-ready narrative structures. The AI does not replace human judgment but provides a foundation for writers and directors to work from, according to the reports.
Anthony expressed interest in making authentic content creation more accessible, saying, “You don’t have to wait for a Hollywood producer to call. With PAI, any former player with a decent story can have their own documentary.” However, the reports humorously note that the AI should avoid scenes where Michael Jordan cries in every episode, as it would be more drama than sports.
Unrealized Lakers Trade and NBA Career
Carmelo Anthony also revealed a significant unrealized moment in his NBA career. In a 2024 interview with Dwyane Wade, Anthony confirmed that in 2011 he was close to being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in a deal that would have sent him and Nene to Los Angeles in exchange for Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum, according to Basketball-World | News.
Anthony stated, “The deal was already done. I never thought about New York. But when they rejected the trade, it was clear: ‘Okay, you don’t want me in the West. Then send me to the East.’” Originally, there had been plans to send him to the New Jersey Nets before the Knicks entered the picture.
Ultimately, Anthony ended up in New York, where he achieved individual success but never reached the NBA Finals. The missed Lakers deal is now seen as a potential turning point for both Anthony and the franchise. Anthony retired in 2022 with over 28,000 career points but without a championship title.
