Excitement is mounting in Mexico as the World Cup opens in Mexico City before moving to the city of Guadalajara; Mexican journalist Leon Krauze is a football fan who attended the World Cup in Mexico previously and is eagerly anticipating the event once more.
Football Legacy in Guadalajara
Guadalajara has a rich footballing history. In 1970, Pele’s Brazil played there, and in 1986, Zico and Socrates also took to the field. Krauze highlights that there is a strong connection between the city and football, describing it as a “love affair” with the sport. He predicts that the World Cup will bring a “wonderful party” to the city.
Security Concerns and Cartel Influence
However, Krauze also notes the challenges. Guadalajara is the capital of Jalisco, a state that has become the center of one of the most notorious criminal organizations in Mexican history. The presence of criminal cartels in the region raises security concerns for the World Cup. A significant security operation is expected during the tournament to address these concerns.
These concerns are compounded by the response of the US president, Donald Trump, to the drugs trade in Venezuela. His actions have had a ripple effect on the region, including in Mexico. Krauze explains that the Washington government is “really just waiting for the right moment and the right excuse to go into Mexico and take unilateral military action.”
Precautions Being Taken
While it is unlikely that football fans will face danger during the World Cup, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is taking no chances. The government is ensuring a strong security presence to protect the event and its attendees. Krauze tells Annie Kelly that this proactive approach is necessary given the current geopolitical climate and the potential for tensions to escalate.
As the World Cup begins, the spotlight is not only on football but also on the challenges posed by criminal cartels and international relations. The interplay between sports and security highlights the complex environment in which the event is taking place.
