Jack Crowley will wear the No. 10 jersey when Ireland faces England at Twickenham on Saturday. The Munster out-half convinced head coach Andy Farrell with his confident bench performances in the 28-4 win over France and the 23-16 victory against Italy.
Farrell put plans for 21-year-old Leinster prospect Sam Prendergast on hold. Prendergast exits the 38-man squad. Ciaran Frawley and Tommy O’Brien take the outside back bench spots instead.
“Because of what we’ve seen and how he’s come through and performed and playing confidently,” Farrell said of Crowley’s selection. He noted that training sessions tipped the scales. “You back what you see.”
Farrell drew parallels to lock James Ryan. Ryan started on the bench against France but delivered a stormer. The coach praised Ryan’s mindset, likening it to his British & Irish Lions tour last summer when he overcame a quad injury to play his best rugby.
Jamison Gibson-Park returns at scrumhalf after injury. The rest of the backline stays steady. Robert Baloucoune earned man-of-the-match honors last week with a dominant display against Italy. Jamie Osborne impressed in attack. James Lowe carried 138 meters. Stuart McCloskey made 17 tackles and set up two tries. Garry Ringrose brings Twickenham know-how from past Tests.
Osborne, McCloskey and Ringrose drop to the bench. Just 10 players—two wings, the halfbacks and eight forwards—have started all three Six Nations games so far: Dan Sheehan, Joe McCarthy and captain Caelan Doris among them.
Ryan’s form opened the door for Tadhg Beirne at blindside flanker. Farrell slotted Ryan at lock alongside McCarthy. Josh van der Flier reclaims openside. That shifts Doris to No. 8, benching Jack Conan despite his Lions series at that position over the summer.
“He’s one of the best impact players,” Farrell said of Conan.
Frawley edges onto the bench as a utility back. Farrell called him “100 percent excited” after limited autumn game time. “For what we’ve seen in training, how sharp he is and how eager he is to get going and the balance that he gives us on the bench, he’ll be ready to go,” the coach added.
Lock Edwin Edogbo, who debuted last week, sits out amid online abuse after his appearance. The IRFU condemned the racist comments immediately. Farrell focused on the player’s well-being.
“First and foremost, it’s all about the player,” he said. “We’ve had the conversation and he’s fine, thankfully.” Farrell skipped reading the abuse. He praised Edogbo’s family, including his father, an A&E nurse in Cork. “He’s made of the right stuff.”
Ireland team: Jamie Osborne; Robert Baloucoune, Garry Ringrose, Stuart McCloskey, James Lowe; Jack Crowley, Jamison Gibson-Park; Andrew Porter, Dan Sheehan, Tadhg Furlong, Joe McCarthy, James Ryan, Tadhg Beirne, Josh van der Flier, Caelan Doris (captain).
