David Vander Meer. A former youth pastor and yoga instructor, was arrested in June 2023 and charged with murder and insurance fraud in connection with the death of his wife, Bernadette Vander Meer, in August 2006 at Zion National Park. The couple had traveled to the park to celebrate their anniversary, and Bernadette fell to her death during a hike up Angels Landing. Vander Meer told investigators he had turned to move their backpacks out of the way for a photo when he heard his wife scream as she fell.
Insurance Policies and Financial Motive
In 2005, Vander Meer purchased $150,000 life insurance policies for himself and his wife; Less than a year later, in November 2005, he increased the policies to $550,000 each. After Bernadette’s death, Vander Meer filed a claim and received a payout of $567,439, according to court records; he allegedly used the money to live lavishly, including buying cars and financing all-expense-paid trips for members of his youth group.
Community Reactions and Professional Background
Vander Meer was known locally as a yoga instructor at TruFusion Summerlin and as a counselor at Somerset Academy Lone Mountain, a school in Las Vegas. A former student, Toni Benolirao-Collantes, described him as a calm, respectful, and hands-on instructor. She noted that he was a regular presence in the yoga community and that his death was both alarming and surreal.
Clark County records show that Vander Meer had been married and divorced three times since Bernadette’s death. One of the women, a regular at his yoga classes, was even featured as an example in group sessions. Somerset Academy placed him on administrative leave following the arrest. TruFusion Summerlin has not yet responded to requests for comment.
Investigation and Reopening of the Case
The initial investigation into Bernadette’s death concluded it was an accident, but the case was reopened in 2022 after Barry Diamond, a former pastor at the same church where Vander Meer worked, raised concerns. Diamond reportedly told investigators he did not believe the death was accidental. The Clark County Coroner’s Office will release the official cause of death and identification of the deceased inmate.
Vander Meer was set to appear in court on Thursday for an extradition hearing but was pronounced dead at a local hospital. He had been in custody since June 22, the same day he was arrested. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office stated he had sustained self-inflicted injuries while in detention.
