Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has called organ donation the ‘greatest gift’ one can give to humanity, highlighting its significance during a film festival focused on raising awareness about the issue. The event, organized by the Dadhichi Deh Dan Samiti, brought together a range of notable figures, including Union Minister of State Harsh Malhotra and Padma Shri awardee actor Manoj Joshi, who attended to support the cause.
Impact on Public Awareness
Kejriwal highlighted that a single individual’s pledge to donate organs can bring hope to countless families. He praised the use of art and cinema as a powerful medium to raise awareness about sensitive topics such as organ and body donation. ‘Raising awareness in society about such issues through art and cinema is both inspiring and notable,’ he said.
According to the Chief Minister, such initiatives support progressive thinking in society and strengthen the spirit of service and dedication towards humanity. He also noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to make organ donation a mass movement serves as a guiding force for the nation. ‘More and more people should draw inspiration from it and associate themselves with this noble cause,’ he said.
Delhi’s Organ Donation Framework
Delhi previously lacked a structured and official mechanism for organ donation, but the situation has since changed. The Delhi Government established the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), which has emerged as a strong platform for individuals willing to pledge for organ donation.
Since its inception in September, more than 800 individuals have registered on the SOTTO platform. However, Kejriwal noted that there remains a need for widespread public awareness in this field. ‘There is a need for more people to understand the importance of organ donation and to take part in this noble service,’ he said.
Kejriwal appealed to the attendees of the event to become aware of themselves and to spread awareness within society. ‘Organ donation is the highest service to humanity and the most sacred means of giving life, even after one’s own,’ he said.
Role of NGOs and Volunteers
The Chief Minister praised the Dadhichi Deh Dan Samiti for its years of public awareness efforts. He commended the dedication of its volunteers, calling them a source of inspiration for society. ‘The efforts of the Samiti and its volunteers have been instrumental in promoting organ donation in the capital,’ he said.
The Samiti, which organized the event, has been working tirelessly to raise awareness about organ donation through various initiatives. Alok Kumar, Patron of the Samiti, and Mahesh Pant, President of the Samiti, were present at the event, highlighting the organization’s commitment to the cause.
The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) is also playing a key role in facilitating organ donation at the national level. However, the Delhi Government’s establishment of SOTTO has provided a more localized and structured approach to the issue.
Kejriwal’s comments come at a time when the need for organ donation in India is more pressing than ever. With thousands of patients waiting for life-saving transplants, the call for greater public participation in the cause is growing louder.
Looking ahead, the Delhi Government is expected to focus on expanding the reach of SOTTO and increasing public awareness through various campaigns. The Chief Minister has also urged citizens to consider registering for organ donation and to encourage others to do the same.
