Attack on Hezbollah’s leadership

The Israeli military carried out a targeted airstrike on an apartment in the southern Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh on the 23rd (local time), Haisam Ali Tabatabai, 57, Hezbollah’s chief of staff, was killed in the attack. Israeli forces claimed the operation eliminated a “terrorist” and disrupted Hezbollah’s command structure.

Hezbollah official Mahmoud Qomati visited the site and told reporters that a key figure of the “resistance” had been targeted, calling it a “crossing of a red line,” according to AFP. The suburb of Dahiyeh is a known Hezbollah stronghold and has been the target of previous strikes.

Ceasefire remains fragile

Despite a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, attacks have continued in recent days; Israeli forces maintain control of land in southern Lebanon and are deliberately destroying civilian infrastructure and homes, according to Amnesty International. The 10-day ceasefire was set to expire, prompting Bissan Fakih, a MENA Campaigner for Amnesty International, to return to her family home in southern Lebanon.

Fakih described crossing a makeshift bridge in Qasmiye, built after Israeli airstrikes destroyed the original, but the bridge allowed her to approach her family home in Tyre, a southern coastal city. Along the way. She encountered the aftermath of an Israeli air strike on a busy waterfront street, Rescue workers were still searching for bodies, with 26 people killed in that attack. A man at the site reported one person remained trapped under the rubble.

Regional tensions and diplomatic efforts

Regional tensions remain high as Lebanon and Israel held direct talks for the first time in 33 years through U.S. mediation on the 14th (local time). Lebanese Ambassador to the United States Nada Hamadeh Moawad and Israeli Ambassador to the United States Yehiel Leiter met with U.S; Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the State Department in Washington.

The meeting marked the first high-level engagement between Lebanon and Israel since 1993, and the two nations remain in a state of conflict since the establishment of Israel in 1948. While the talks agreed to future peace negotiations, Israel continues to carry out airstrikes on Hezbollah, and the group opposes the talks, raising doubts about the potential for a lasting resolution.

Across the Middle East. The conflict has had a devastating human rights impact on millions of people in at least 12 countries, with more than 5,000 people killed, tens of thousands injured, and millions displaced. In Lebanon alone. At least 2,567 people have been killed, including 103 healthcare workers, according to Amnesty International.
