Attack and Casualties
Yesterday at about 9:30pm (19:30 GMT), three large explosions took place in Gaza City, according to Al Jazeera; the attack occurred in the middle of Remal, an area filled with markets and shops where Muslims were shopping for the Eid holiday.
The Israeli military claimed that Odeh. Who had recently taken over as head of Hamas’s military wing, was responsible for planning and coordinating the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel in October 2023, as reported by Al Jazeera. The Israeli army noted that Odeh was one of the last senior commanders in Hamas’ military wing who participated in the planning and execution of the October 7 attacks and combat operations against Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) troops.
Evacuation Orders and New Attacks
On Sunday, the Israeli military issued a new evacuation order for residents in the eastern suburbs of Gaza, including Shejaia, as reported by VOI.id — this order followed a rocket attack claimed by Hamas’s armed wing, which targeted an Israeli military base near the border. The military urged residents to evacuate immediately for their safety.
Meanwhile, in the northern Gaza area, Israeli attacks reportedly killed 32 people, according to Palestinian news agency WAFA and Hamas media. Social media footage showed about a dozen bodies wrapped in blankets in a hospital, with residents saying the building was hit with at least 30 people inside. The Israeli military stated it had attacked a location in Jabalia where “terrorists operate,” saying the target posed a threat to IDF forces.
Broader Context
Since the October 7 attack, Israel has killed several senior Hamas officials, including former political chief Ismail Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar, and Mohammed Deif, as reported by Al Jazeera. The Israeli military also killed Mohammed Sinwar, who had succeeded his brother Yahya Sinwar.
According to Palestinian health authorities, Israel’s military operations in Gaza have killed more than 72,800 people. Since a ceasefire took effect on October 11, at least 906 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed, with the cumulative death toll since October 7, 2023, standing at 72,803, as reported by Gaza’s Ministry of Health.
The Israeli military accused Hamas of using civilian residents and property for military purposes, a claim the militant group denies, according to VOI.id. The military also emphasized that civilians should avoid areas where military operations are ongoing.
