John Branca, the attorney behind some of Michael Jackson’s most major business moves, has long operated in the shadows of pop history; But with the release of the biopic “Michael” in April 2025, his role in shaping the King of Pop’s legacy has come to the forefront. The film, starring Miles Teller as Branca, highlights his partnership with Jackson, which began in 1980 and led to one of the most consequential music deals of all time: the purchase of the ATV Music catalog for $47.5 million in 1985.
A Key Partnership
John Branca first met Michael Jackson in 1980 when the singer was just 21 years old and still under the control of his father, Joseph Jackson. At the time, Branca, a New York-based music attorney, had already built a reputation for representing entertainment icons, including Elvis Presley, the Beach Boys, and the Rolling Stones. Their connection was immediate. “He said, ‘Do I know you?’,” Branca recalled in an interview with the Associated Press. “It was one of those things you have in life where you feel so comfortable.”
The partnership quickly proved significant. Branca advised Jackson to move away from his father’s management and develop a more independent career. Within three years, he was instrumental in launching the landmark “Thriller” music video, which cost $1 million and required working through Jackson’s religious restrictions as a Jehovah’s Witness. Branca secured funding by negotiating a behind-the-scenes special for MTV and Showtime, a move that paid off handsomely as the video became a cultural phenomenon.
The $47.5M Catalog Deal
But Branca’s most significant achievement came in 1985 with the acquisition of the ATV Music catalog. This collection contained nearly all of the Beatles’ compositions, along with works by Little Richard, the Pointer Sisters, and Pat Benatar. The $47.5 million deal, then considered a financial gamble—ultimately transformed Jackson from a performer into a mogul. The catalog became a multi-billion-dollar asset and a cornerstone of Jackson’s financial empire.
According to Vanity Fair España, Jackson rewarded Branca with two Rolls Royce cars—one after securing the Beatles catalog and another after purchasing the Neverland Ranch. Their relationship extended beyond business. Jackson named Branca as his executor in his will, alongside John McClain, a music producer, rather than his family members. At the time of Jackson’s death in 2009, the singer had accumulated a debt of over $500 million, but the catalog became a key asset in settling his estate.
A Legacy in Film and Memory
While Branca has long been a behind-the-scenes figure, the new biopic “Michael” brings his story to the public in a more personal and dramatic light. Jafaar Jackson, a real-life nephew of Michael Jackson, portrays the young pop icon in the film, while Miles Teller takes on the role of Branca. The movie explores Jackson’s early life in Gary, Indiana, his rise with The Jackson 5, and his complex relationship with his father, Joseph, portrayed by Colman Domingo.
Branca’s personal anecdotes with Jackson also highlight their close bond. In a post on Instagram, Branca recounted how Jackson served as his best man at his first wedding and brought along Bubbles, his chimpanzee companion. In another story, Jackson visited Branca’s home for a business meeting, only to end up singing songs from the film “Funny Girl” to Branca’s three-year-old daughter.
As the world continues to celebrate the life and legacy of Michael Jackson, Branca’s role remains a serious part of the narrative, both in business and in memory.
