A U.S. Border Patrol agent has been arrested near the U.S.-Mexico border after a fatal shooting involving a smuggling operation, according to the FBI. The incident occurred on Tuesday near Arivaca, Arizona, when a 34-year-old man, identified as Patrick Gary Schlegel, was shot during an exchange of gunfire with federal agents. Schlegel had a prior criminal history, including a 2025 warrant for escape following a smuggling conviction.

Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

Schlegel was wounded and transported to a regional trauma center in Tucson by medical helicopter, according to the Santa Rita Fire District; the FBI has launched a standard use-of-force investigation into the incident, with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department assisting in the probe.

Federal agents were attempting to apprehend Schlegel when he fired at both agents and a U.S. Border Patrol helicopter, the FBI said. The agent involved was taken into federal custody and is expected to face criminal charges, according to FBI Special Agent Heith Janke.

Arivaca, located about 10 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, is a common route for drug smuggling and unauthorized border crossings, but Federal agents regularly patrol the area due to the high volume of illegal activity.

Similar incidents have occurred in recent years, including a New Year’s Eve shooting in Los Angeles where an off-duty ICE agent fatally shot Keith Porter Jr. Federal officials described Porter as an “active shooter,” while his family and advocates argued he was not a threat, though the Los Angeles Police Department and district attorney’s office are investigating but have not yet filed charges.

Controversies and Public Response

The use of force by immigration and law enforcement agencies remains a contentious issue. In another incident in Los Angeles, 32-year-old resident Velez was arrested during an ICE raid and charged with assaulting an officer, despite her claims that she did not attack anyone. The Trump administration has pursued aggressive enforcement actions, leading to the detention of over 2,000 immigrants in southern California in June alone.

Meanwhile, in Mexico City, a similar pattern of violence was reported, and Police chief Omar García Harfuch was targeted in an assassination attempt, with two members of his security detail and a civilian killed. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) was implicated in the attack, which involved 12 arrests and an organized plan to intercept García’s vehicle; Authorities are still investigating the full scope of the attack and the involvement of individuals from multiple states and even Colombia.
