LIV Golf has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, with court documents revealing that more than $45 million is owed to players and creditors; the filing outlines the 30 largest unsecured claims, with two-time major winner Jon Rahm topping the list with a $7.5 million claim. Other prominent names include Bryson DeChambeau ($5.7 million), Dustin Johnson ($5.5 million), Cameron Smith ($4.8 million), and Tyrrell Hatton ($3.4 million), according to the BBC.
Players Free to Leave as Contracts Expire
Players are now free to leave LIV Golf, as contracts under the previous iteration of the league are expected to terminate due to the bankruptcy filing. BBC Sport reports that there is no obligation for players to continue with LIV 2.0, even if they had signed multi-year contracts with the original iteration of the tour. The Chapter 11 process also allows LIV to begin discussions with players about their participation in the new, majority player-owned league, which is set to begin early next year.
Brooks Koepka, who left LIV to rejoin the PGA Tour in January, still has an unsecured claim of $1.7 million. The total amount owed to the 14 current and former LIV players in the top 30 creditors is just over $45 million, according to court records.
LIV’s Financial Struggles and Restructuring Plans
The court filing indicates that LIV estimates its assets at between $100 million and $500 million, while liabilities are estimated to be between $500 million and $1 billion. The Saudi-backed breakaway tour has struggled financially since the Public Investment Fund (PIF) decided to discontinue its funding beyond the 2026 season, according to talkSPORT, but this decision left the long-term future of LIV in question, with the 2026 season ending early.
Earlier this year, LIV Golf canceled two events and cut prize money for its Indianapolis event; the organization has also laid off the majority of its staff. Despite these challenges, LIV Golf chief executive Scott O’Neil expressed optimism about the future. In a statement, he said: ‘The people of LIV Golf, led by the players, have continued to show incredible resilience, commitment, and a shared belief in what we are building. Thanks to their tireless work, LIV Golf has created a foundation to entertain and inspire the next generation of global golf fans around the world.’
Uncertain Future for LIV and Its Players
O’Neil added that the restructuring process provides the necessary structure and time to pursue a ‘landmark transaction’ and begin the next chapter of LIV Golf; However, the LIV statement also clarified that ‘no definitive decisions regarding the 2027 schedule or individual events are being announced at this time.’
Since its controversial launch in 2021, LIV Golf has spent more than $5 billion to lure top golfers, including major winners like Rahm and DeChambeau, while However, the tour has faced significant uncertainty, both in terms of its financial stability and the future of its star players.
Players are now in a position to explore opportunities with other tours, though it remains unclear when they will be able to enter into formal negotiations. The restructuring of LIV Golf is expected to be a complex process, with the court overseeing how debts are addressed and whether the new version of the tour can sustain itself in the long term.
