Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court had ordered Flávio Bolsonaro to surrender his passports within 24 hours after his election loss to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. A police source told AFP that Bolsonaro’s passports had been “cancelled” and that there was “no formal record” of him leaving the country. Bolsonaro had agreed to comply with the order but had not done so by Tuesday afternoon.

According to Argentine outlet Infobae, Flávio Bolsonaro arrived in Puerto Iguazú on Tuesday using his national identity card and was preparing to continue to the U.S. on a private Gulfstream G400 jet, owned by Baires Fly SA. The plane had left Buenos Aires for Puerto Iguazú on Monday. Bolsonaro’s allies have been unable to contact him since early Tuesday.

Rogério Marinho, Bolsonaro’s general campaign coordinator, denied that he had left Brazil. Argentina’s government also rejected the claims. Bolsonaro’s legal team had advised him to comply with the passport surrender order, but he had not done so by Tuesday afternoon.

A senior U.S. administration official told NPR that the State Department would issue visas to Bolsonaro and his family, allowing them to enter the U.S. Bolsonaro faces multiple investigations in Brazil, including allegations of money laundering and tax evasion, which he denies.

President Lula criticized Bolsonaro’s reported departure during celebrations for his 81st birthday in Brasília. “A person who sneaks out of their country must have something to hide,” Lula said, according to AFP. He also remarked, “Brazil is their second home; their first home is the United States,” referring to the Bolsonaro family’s close ties to the Trump administration.

U.S. President Donald Trump suggested on Monday that the Brazilian election was “rigged,” without providing evidence. He later said, “Brazil is also doing a good job of it, aren’t they?” at an event in Texas.

Flávio Bolsonaro’s brother, Eduardo, who lives in Texas, had encouraged him to leave Brazil if he lost the election. Eduardo was sentenced to four years in prison in June for illegally lobbying the Trump administration. A warrant was recently issued for his arrest.
