Mariska Hargitay will host the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, airing on NBC on 14 September, the announcement was made on Tuesday by NBCUniversal, the day before nominations are scheduled to be revealed. The show will also stream on Peacock, with the event taking place at the Peacock Theater, the venue that has long served as the Emmys’ home and will soon host the Oscars.
Longtime NBC Star and Advocate
Hargitay, 62, has been a signature personality for NBC since 1999, starring as Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, one of the longest-running dramas in TV history. She has been nominated eight times for her role and won the lead actress in a drama series award in 2006; this fall, SVU is set to surpass 600 episodes in its 28th season.
Throughout her career. Hargitay has used her platform to advocate for sexual assault victims, using her role in SVU to raise awareness and support for survivors, she may also be a nominee this year as a director and producer of My Mom Jayne, a documentary about her mother, Jayne Mansfield.
Emmy Hosting and Network Rotation
Hargitay is the rare non-comedian to be given the hosting role, which was held last year by Nate Bargatze on CBS. The responsibility of airing the Emmys rotates among the “big four” US broadcast networks—CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox,even as their nominations have become less frequent in the streaming era.
NBC is unlikely to see many nominations in key categories on Wednesday. However, the all-time Emmy leader Saturday Night Live is expected to receive its usual share of nods. The nominations will be announced by recent winners Liza Colón-Zayas and Jeff Hiller at the Television Academy in Los Angeles.
Leading Nominees Expected
Among the leading nominees are Pluribus from Apple TV and The Pitt from HBO Max, starring former longtime NBC star Noah Wyle. These shows are expected to be strong contenders when the nominations are revealed.
Hargitay also made headlines earlier this year for her presence at Madison Square Garden, where she was in the front row for the championship run of her beloved New York Knicks. Her visibility in both entertainment and sports highlights her enduring influence in the media setting.
