Mitch McConnell, the 84-year-old Senate Minority Leader, has remained in the hospital since 14 June, when he was found unconscious at his Washington, D.C. home. Emergency dispatch audio obtained by media outlets indicates that first responders were called to the scene due to reports of an unconscious person and that CPR was in progress, according to The Guardian.

A Staffer’s Vague Comments Add to the Uncertainty

On 27 June, a man was seen leaving McConnell’s D.C. residence. When questioned by journalists, he said he was only hired to check the house and did not work for McConnell’s office or his family. “They just gave me a key [to] check the house, that’s it,” he said, according to The Daily Beast. The man added that he had not seen McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, and had no further information about the senator’s condition.

Speculation and Criticism Rise

McConnell’s office has provided few details about his health, repeating a July 2 statement that he is “continuing to improve” and remains engaged with Senate business. The lack of transparency has fueled speculation, including from Malcolm Nance, a former counter-terrorism intelligence officer, who told Amy McGrath on the Truth in the Barrel podcast: “I think he’s dead. It’s very clear. I heard that 911 tape and I was an EMT when I was in the military at one point and you know we used to do CPR a lot. One of the things that teach you about CPR is the probability of coming back from CPR is very, very, very small.”

McGrath, a former marine fighter pilot who lost to McConnell in the 2020 election, responded: “Well, it’s an interesting take. We’ll see what happens there as well.”

Senate Business at Risk

The Senate is set to return on 8 July for a four-week legislative session focused on defense spending, national security, and government funding. McConnell’s absence threatens to complicate Republican efforts to advance these measures, given the party’s narrow 53-47 majority, as noted by The Guardian. According to an emergency call first obtained by The Daily Beast, first responders were dispatched to McConnell’s home on 14 June due to “cardiac arrest,” with CPR in progress. However, his office has not confirmed the nature of his illness or explained his ongoing hospitalization.
