Health Status and Privacy Concerns
McConnell’s office has provided few details about his health status but reported a few days ago that he “appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital.” His office on Thursday also said the 84-year-old senator “continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session,” according to The Hill.
The scant detail about what sent him to the hospital on June 14, combined with the alarming audio from an emergency dispatcher, has fueled speculation that McConnell’s condition is much worse than his staff has acknowledged. Al Cross, Kentucky’s longest-tenured political observer, said McConnell’s secretive response to his health emergency has fueled rumors about worst-case scenarios.
“They’re causing themselves problems by not saying more about it, but he’s always been very private about his health matters,” said Cross, who conducted two interviews with McConnell in the past six weeks for a historical project, according to The Hill.
Political Implications of Absence
McConnell has not voted since June 11. Three days after that, his office said he was admitted to hospital. Most recently, his staff has said McConnell was “receiving excellent care.” “The senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session,” the staff said, according to Al Jazeera.
On Tuesday, political commentator and former adviser Scott Jennings said he had spoken to McConnell “this morning” for about 20 minutes. “I told him we want to see him back at work as soon as possible,” he said in a post on X, according to Al Jazeera.
The offices of Senate Majority Leader John Thune and fellow Republican Senator John Barrasso also said the pair had recently spoken with McConnell, according to the Politico news site. Still, other lawmakers pointed to a lack of clarity, even as they rejected any coordinated effort to conceal McConnell’s condition.
Speculation and Physical Struggles
McConnell’s office has not released any details on why he was hospitalised or any treatment he is receiving. “Many of us aren’t speaking about Mitch McConnell’s condition because we know nothing about his condition,” Utah Senator Mike Lee, a Republican, posted on X, responding to a post from a Make America Great Again (MAGA) influencer, according to Al Jazeera.
McConnell’s prolonged absence could adversely affect Republicans, who hold a slim 53-47 majority in the U.S. Senate. The senator has appeared frail while maneuvering around the Senate’s crowded hallways this year. He is often pushed through the Capitol by staff in a wheelchair, and when he walks into the Senate chamber, he usually has an aide or security detail — or two — by his side to help steady him, according to The Hill.
McConnell was diagnosed with polio as a 2-year-old boy, and his mother spent two years helping him perform grueling exercises to recover, according to The Hill.
