MixRift co-founder and CEO Bobby Voicu traces his path in gaming back to 2005, when he launched an online consulting firm that pivoted into mobile development. He co-founded mobile studio MavenHut, serving as CEO until its 2016 exit, then shifted to angel investing and mentoring startups before starting MixRift in 2024.
“We’ve always harnessed device-native features for standout experiences,” Voicu said. “Mixed reality unlocks far more potential.” He runs a newsletter tracking XR trends across industries.
The studio spotted a gap in XR gaming: hot devices like Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest, but few titles that truly exploit their capabilities. MixRift builds social, accessible games through fast cycles of prototyping, launch, and live feedback adaptation. Players shape the final products from day one.
Hell Horde, the first release, hit 150,000 downloads on Meta Quest in its opening 30 days and now exceeds 300,000 with a 4.4-star rating. Other titles include Fractured, a 3D puzzle game for both platforms, and Battle Orb, a co-op experience emphasizing social play.
“When a game truly connects, players don’t just try it—they embrace it,” Voicu said. Failures get scrapped quickly; hits like Hell Horde fuel the pipeline.
Challenges abound in XR’s fast evolution. Standing out means crafting MR-exclusive games that demand the hardware’s full power. MixRift tests in real markets against rivals, not labs. “We build with players, not just for them,” Voicu said.
Technology focuses on three pillars: standout MR moments, social connections, and stress-relieving immersion. The studio stays MR-only, avoiding distractions from other platforms. Upcoming games will push these boundaries further.
Milestones pile up. Pre-seed funding closed in seven weeks this year. Hell Horde’s success followed, then Fractured and Battle Orb. The latest coup: Dr. Ingrid Cotoros joined the board. A former Meta Reality Labs VP and GoPro executive, she specializes in VR, AR and smart glasses tech.
The mixed reality market sits at $8.7 billion, with software claiming 45% and gaming/entertainment 30% of that slice, according to Voicu. MixRift eyes that niche.
What sets MixRift apart? Relentless iteration. Concepts prototype fast, hit players’ hands, then evolve or die based on data. Competitors sink years into controlled tests on single titles. MixRift launches multiples, learns live, and pivots.
“We theorize our audience, but real feedback rules,” Voicu said. This agility positions the studio as an MR leader while the market matures.
