Nanded, Mar 11 — Nanded district in central Maharashtra has intensified efforts to ensure strict implementation of a law aimed at curbing illegal sex determination and female foeticide, an official has said. District Collector Rahul Kardile has directed officials to take firm action against such unlawful practices and strictly implement the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act.
Enforcement Measures and Reward Scheme
Kardile was speaking at a meeting of the District-Level Vigilance Committee held on March 9 at the collector’s office. During the meeting, a detailed review of the registration and renewal of sonography and Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) centres in the district was conducted. The state government has announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh to individuals who provide credible information on sex determination and abortion rackets. The health department has launched the informer scheme to improve the gender ratio and prevent female foeticide.
According to the health department, the reward scheme is intended to incentivize citizens to report illegal activities. The scheme is part of a broader strategy to tackle gender discrimination and promote gender equality. Officials stated that the move follows a series of reports about unauthorized sex determination clinics operating in various parts of the state.
Kardile emphasized that illegal sex determination is a serious offence and directed departments concerned to work in coordination to curb such practices. He said that the district administration would not tolerate any violation of the PCPNDT Act and would take strict legal action against those found guilty.
Collaborative Efforts and Awareness Campaigns
The district collector stressed the need for large-scale awareness campaigns with the support of social organisations to stop illegal sex determination activities. He said that the awareness campaigns would focus on educating the public about the legal consequences of such practices and the importance of gender equality.
According to officials, the campaigns would be conducted in collaboration with local NGOs, schools, and community leaders. The goal is to change societal attitudes and discourage the practice of female foeticide. Officials also mentioned that the awareness campaigns would include workshops, seminars, and community meetings.
Kardile said that the district administration is working closely with the police and health departments to ensure that the PCPNDT Act is strictly enforced. He added that the district is also reviewing the compliance of all diagnostic centres to ensure they are operating within the legal framework.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) department has also been instructed to remain vigilant to curb unauthorized abortions. Officials said that the FDA would conduct regular inspections of medical facilities to ensure that they are following the legal guidelines and that no unauthorized procedures are taking place.
Significance and Real-World Impact
The enforcement of the PCPNDT Act in Nanded district is expected to have a significant impact on the region’s gender dynamics. According to data from the National Census, the sex ratio in the state has been declining over the years, with a significant number of female foeticides reported annually. The implementation of strict measures is seen as a step towards reversing this trend.
According to a recent report by the state health department, the number of cases of illegal sex determination has increased by 20% in the past two years. The report also highlighted that the majority of cases are concentrated in urban areas, where diagnostic centres are more prevalent.
Ordinary citizens are likely to benefit from these measures as they will help reduce the incidence of female foeticide and promote gender equality. The reward scheme is expected to encourage more people to report illegal activities, thereby increasing the chances of prosecution.
Experts have noted that the strict enforcement of the PCPNDT Act is crucial for improving the overall gender ratio in the state. They have also emphasized the need for continued awareness campaigns to ensure that the public understands the importance of gender equality and the legal consequences of illegal sex determination.
According to Kardile, the district administration is committed to ensuring that the PCPNDT Act is strictly implemented. He added that the administration is working closely with all concerned departments to ensure that the law is enforced without any compromise.
The next phase of the campaign will involve a detailed review of all diagnostic centres in the district to ensure compliance with the legal framework. Officials said that the review will be completed by the end of the month, and any non-compliant centres will be shut down immediately.
The district collector also emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and civil society to ensure that the measures are effective. He said that the administration is open to suggestions from the public and civil society organizations to improve the implementation of the law.
With the implementation of these measures, Nanded district is taking a significant step towards curbing illegal sex determination and promoting gender equality. The district administration is hopeful that these efforts will have a positive impact on the region’s gender dynamics in the long term.
