A Vision of the Future

At the top of the Obama Presidential Center is the Sky Room, where visitors can take in panoramic views of Chicago’s South and West Sides and Lake Michigan. The space features a monumental artwork by Idris Khan that uses words from President Obama’s Selma speech, creating a sense of upward motion and an open future. The center. Designed by Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, includes 28 site-specific art installations and a new branch of the Chicago Public Library.

More Than a Museum

Unlike traditional presidential libraries, the Obama Presidential Center does not emphasize archives or books — Instead, it focuses on interactive exhibits and multimedia presentations. Visitors can walk through a full-scale replica of the Oval Office and view displays on Obama’s key achievements, such as the Affordable Care Act and the killing of Osama bin Laden. The museum also features a basketball court and a community garden; According to Michael Strautmanis of the Obama Foundation, the former president has largely allowed staff to manage the project independently.

Global Impact and Legacy

Barack Obama’s legacy extends beyond U.S. borders, his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, visited Hiroshima in July 2024 and referenced Obama’s paper cranes given to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Obama himself became the first sitting U.S. president to visit Hiroshima in May 2016, Meanwhile, the center’s opening on Juneteenth highlights its symbolic significance for African American history and civil rights. The museum’s inaugural weekend featured live performances, food vendors, and community events, with museum tickets already sold out.

Though the center avoids highlighting controversies such as the NSA’s surveillance of Angela Merkel, it stands as a significant cultural and historical site, and the Obama Presidential Center reflects a modern approach to presidential legacy, emphasizing community engagement and future possibilities over past records. It joins the ranks of other presidential libraries like George W; Bush’s in Dallas and Donald Trump’s soon-to-be-announced presidential library in Miami.
