Lauren Bennett, the British singer best known for her feature on LMFAO’s 2011 hit ‘Party Rock Anthem,’ has died at the age of 37, and the news was confirmed by her former band G.R.L., who posted a heartfelt statement on their Instagram account on July 6.
Early Career and Musical Contributions
Bennett was born on June 24, 1989, in Meopham, England. She began her music career at a young age, joining the Paradiso Girls in 2007 when she was just 17. The group released their debut single ‘Patron Tequila’ in 2009, which charted at number three on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. Bennett later launched a solo career and collaborated with artists like CeeLo Green and will.i.am before joining LMFAO for ‘Party Rock Anthem.’
‘Party Rock Anthem’ became a global phenomenon, spending six weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2011. The song has since been named the fifth most successful song of all time by Billboard. Bennett’s vocals on the track, including the catchy ‘Shake that’ refrain, were a key element of its success.
Members of G.R.L. Pay Tribute
G.R.L. members Natasha Slayton, Emmalyn Estrada, and Paula van Oppen expressed their grief in a statement shared on Instagram. ‘It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Lauren,’ they wrote. ‘Our hearts are broken, and we cannot begin to express how much she meant to us.’
The statement continued: ‘We will forever cherish the love, laughter, and countless memories she gave us. Her beautiful spirit touched so many lives, and she will be deeply missed and forever loved.’
G.R.L. was formed in 2014 as a reboot of the Pussycat Dolls and included Bennett, Slayton, van Oppen, Estrada, and Simone Battle. The group’s most popular single was ‘Ugly Heart,’ and they also appeared on Pitbull’s ‘Wild Wild Love.’ The group disbanded in 2015 following Battle’s death in 2014.
Personal and Professional Legacy
Bennett’s cause of death has not been disclosed, and an inquest into the circumstances of her death is scheduled for October, according to Kent and Medway Coroner records. Her representatives have not commented publicly on the matter.
Beyond her work with LMFAO and G.R.L., Bennett contributed to the soundtracks of the films ‘Date Night’ and ’21 Jump Street.’ Her former bandmate Aria Crescendo also paid tribute, expressing disbelief at the news and recalling her last conversation with Bennett just a week before her death.
Bennett’s contributions to music and her role in some of the decade’s most iconic songs have left a lasting impact on the pop music scene. As fans and colleagues mourn her loss, they continue to celebrate her legacy and the joy she brought to her audiences.
