Graham Platner. A 41-year-old oyster farmer and military veteran, has secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S; Senate in Maine, positioning himself to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the November general election, as Platner won the primary as two-term Democratic Gov, and Janet Mills suspended her campaign after failing to gain momentum, according to NBC News and Al Jazeera.
Controversies and Campaign Focus
Platner’s campaign has been overshadowed by several controversies, but Reports have emerged of sexually explicit messages exchanged with women while he was married, as well as allegations of physical intimidation from a former girlfriend. Platner’s campaign has denied the claims. Old online posts also resurfaced that appeared to endorse political violence and make remarks dismissive of military sexual assault — he attributed those comments to a period of mental health struggles, including PTSD and depression following two combat deployments.
He also apologized for posts containing homophobic slurs and insults directed at rural communities and law enforcement. A tattoo later identified as a Nazi symbol prompted further scrutiny, though Platner said he was unaware of its significance. He has since covered the tattoo.
Political Stances and Endorsements
Platner has focused his campaign on the rising cost of living, housing affordability, and healthcare. He has received early endorsements from progressive figures, including Senator Bernie Sanders. However, former Gov. Mills has yet to endorse him, despite having withdrawn from the race citing fundraising difficulties.
In his victory speech in Blue Hill, Maine, where he was born, Platner emphasized a message of redemption and change. “If you believe, as I do, that we can change our politics and change our country, then you must also believe that people can change,” he told supporters.
Incumbent’s Response and Election Outlook
Collins, first elected in 1996 and chair of the powerful Committee on Appropriations, is the last Republican senator from New England. Maine voted for Democrat Kamala Harris over Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race, according to Al Jazeera.
Platner has already launched a series of attacks on Collins, accusing her of being “spineless and corrupt” and accusing her of lying about protecting Roe v. Wade. In a statement, Collins’ campaign responded, “Mainers aren’t looking for bitter campaigns, grand promises, or angry speeches riddled with lies. They’re looking for results.”
With the race officially set, the Senate election has become a key battleground in the fight for control of the chamber. Collins, who ran unopposed for renomination, will face Platner in what is expected to be a closely watched and contentious race. Both candidates will have the opportunity to define the issues and appeal to Maine voters in the coming months.
