SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have reached a tentative four-year agreement, according to Deadline, including AI protections and a significant pension fund contribution. The deal, which followed weeks of negotiations, now awaits a vote from the guild’s 160,000 members, but is expected to pass as it did with the recent WGA agreement. The agreement includes a “sizable” contribution to SAG-AFTRA’s pension fund, mirroring the WGA’s deal with studios and streamers last month. The news comes after SAG-AFTRA paused negotiations in March to allow the WGA to finalize its own agreement.
AI Protections and Pension Boosts
According to sources cited by Deadline, the agreement includes a series of AI “guardrail” measures, which were a key point of contention during negotiations. SAG-AFTRA Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland had been particularly firm on these protections. The deal also includes a multi-million-dollar contribution to the guild’s pension fund, a critical issue for members concerned about long-term financial stability. This aligns with the WGA’s recent agreement, which included similar provisions for its struggling healthcare plan.
Legal Tensions Over AI in Hollywood
While the labor deal brings a temporary resolution to contract negotiations, the broader legal battle over AI remains unresolved. In a separate development, Disney and NBCUniversal have filed a lawsuit against Midjourney, a generative AI company, accusing it of copyright infringement. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court of Los Angeles, includes 110 pages of examples where Midjourney allegedly generated images mimicking characters like Yoda, Bart Simpson, and Shrek. Disney’s attorney, Horacio Gutierrez, stated that “piracy is piracy, and the fact that it’s done by an AI company does not make it any less infringing.” The case raises a key legal question: Can training AI on copyrighted material be considered fair use?
Personal News from the Red Carpet
While negotiations and legal battles dominate headlines in Hollywood, personal milestones also make waves. On the red carpet of the SAG Actors’ Awards, Law Roach, Zendaya’s longtime stylist, confirmed that Zendaya and Tom Holland are already married. “The wedding’s already happened. You missed it,” Roach told Access Hollywood in a sing-song tone, indicating he knew exactly what he was doing. Roach, who recently returned to celebrity styling with a new client, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, added that he considers Zendaya “his little sister.” The news follows speculation and social media rumors, and Roach’s confirmation brought a lighthearted moment to an otherwise tense awards season.
Meanwhile, in a more somber update, Colombian actress and businesswoman Sofía Vergara posted from a hospital, revealing she underwent a second knee surgery. In her post, she wrote, “It’s done! Round 2,” echoing the phrase used in SAG-AFTRA’s recent deal. Vergara first announced a knee procedure in 2023 and had been in a relationship with her surgeon, Dr. Justin Saliman, at the time. Their relationship reportedly ended in early 2025. Vergara, best known for her role in “Modern Family,” has a large following on social media and received an outpouring of support from fans after her hospital post.
