New Delhi — French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife joined a select group of Bollywood figures for an exclusive luncheon on February 17, kicking off his India visit with a focus on film industry ties.

Shabana Azmi, a veteran actress who attended the event, called Macron engaging and receptive. “He was very charming, very attentive and he was with us to listen,” Azmi said in an interview.

The intimate meal included six actors—Anil Kapoor, Manoj Bajpayee, Richa Chadha, Shabana Azmi—and three directors: Zoya Akhtar, Neeraj Ghaywan and Kanu Behl. Ricky Tej, part of Macron’s official delegation, also participated.

Azmi highlighted the productive talks on potential India-France cinema collaborations. “Many initiatives were discussed,” she noted. “The fact that this was the first stop of his trip shows his appreciation of the fact that film is not only a cultural exchange but a tool of soft power that can support economic growth too.”

Macron’s afternoon engagement underscored France’s interest in Bollywood as more than entertainment. Officials from his delegation joined the conversation, signaling serious intent for partnerships. Azmi’s account paints a picture of genuine dialogue, rare for high-level diplomatic stops.

The luncheon stood out amid Macron’s packed schedule. India, a key partner for France in defense, trade and culture, welcomed the president for talks on broader bilateral issues. Yet this artistic overture set a warm tone.

Bollywood leaders like Kapoor and Bajpayee brought star power. Directors Akhtar, known for ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,’ Ghaywan of ‘Masaan’ fame, and Behl added creative heft. Richa Chadha, rising in indie and mainstream films, rounded out the actors.

Azmi, a National Award winner with decades in parallel cinema, emphasized cinema’s soft power. Her presence lent gravitas. Recent projects, like her wrap on ‘USA vs Raj’ with Kabir Bedi, keep her in the spotlight.

France and India have co-produced films before, but Macron’s direct involvement hints at expanded funding or festival links. Discussions reportedly touched co-productions, distribution deals and training exchanges.

The event reflects Bollywood’s global pull. Macron, on his first India trip as president, chose filmmakers to launch outreach. Azmi’s positive take suggests the strategy worked.

Delegation members listened intently, Azmi added. Macron stayed engaged throughout, supporting an open exchange. No formal agreements emerged, but seeds for future deals appear planted.
