FX has ordered a limited series titled “Legends,” reuniting much of the “Sons of Anarchy” main cast for the first time in over a decade, Variety reported. The show will feature Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi, who previously starred in the outlaw biker drama.
Blurring the Line Between Life and Art
The logline for the show states that when the cast of “Sons of Anarchy” reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood faces a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show. The premise suggests a meta take on the original series, with a focus on the characters’ real-life dynamics and the challenges they now face beyond the fictional world of “Sons of Anarchy.”
Charlie Hunnam and Jonathan Groff Develop the Series
Charlie Hunnam developed the show alongside Jonathan Groff, known for his work on “black-ish” and “How I Met Your Mother.” Both will serve as executive producers, along with Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn. The series will be produced by FX Productions and 20th Television. Hunnam, who previously starred as Jax Teller in the original series, has shown a growing interest in creative production in recent years.
“When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision,” said Nick Grad, FX Entertainment president. “Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer, and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.”
Legacy of ‘Sons of Anarchy’ on FX
“Sons of Anarchy,” created by Kurt Sutter, was one of FX’s major early successes as the network expanded into original scripted dramas nearly 20 years ago. Originally premiering in 2008, the show ran for seven seasons and nearly 100 episodes. Its success helped solidify FX’s reputation in the scripted drama space and introduced a new generation of actors to wider audiences.
Hunnam has since expanded his career beyond the show. He recently received his first Emmy nomination for his role in the Netflix anthology series “Monster: The Ed Gein Story.” In addition to “Sons of Anarchy,” Hunnam has appeared in the Apple series adaptation of “Shantaram” and shows like “Queer as Folk” and “Undeclared.” In film, he has appeared in “The Gentlemen,” “Pacific Rim,” “True History of the Kelly Gang,” “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire,” and “The Lost City of Z.”
The new limited series marks a significant return for the “Sons of Anarchy” cast, who have not all appeared together since the show’s conclusion in 2014. With a focus on meta-narratives and real-world threats, the series promises to blend the nostalgia of the original with a fresh, contemporary take on the characters and their relationships.
