Sunetra Pawar, the widow of late NCP chief Ajit Pawar, has been elected as the national president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) after the party’s national executive unanimously approved the decision, as announced by senior leader Praful Patel. The move comes just 13 days after Ajit Pawar’s death, marking a significant transition in the party’s leadership.

Leadership Transition and Party Unity

Praful Patel, a long-time associate of Ajit Pawar, addressed the party’s leaders and delegates during the national executive meeting. In an emotional speech, Patel recalled the period of uncertainty and speculation that followed Ajit Pawar’s leadership changes. He emphasized that despite the debates, there was a clear consensus among senior leaders on the party’s future direction.

Patel described his own 35-year journey alongside Ajit Pawar, highlighting his roles as an associate, worker, leader, and founding member of the party. He formally proposed Sunetra Pawar’s name for the top post, stating that the NCP must move forward with unity and renewed strength under the new leadership.

Patel also indicated that Parth Pawar, Ajit Pawar’s son, is likely to be given an important organisational role in the coming days, further reinforcing the family’s continued influence within the party.

Assumption of Ministerial Duties

Sunetra Pawar took charge of her ministerial duties at the state secretariat just 13 days after her husband’s death. She attended her first cabinet meeting as the new minister, marking her formal entry into the political and administrative framework of Maharashtra.

In a post on X, Sunetra expressed her feelings about the new role, stating that she felt a deep sense of trust, duty, and sacrifice. She acknowledged the lifelong commitment of Ajit Pawar to the development of Maharashtra and his tireless work for the people, saying that his legacy would continue to guide her.

Sunetra has been assigned the portfolios of State Excise Duty, Sports and Youth Affairs, and Minorities Development and Auqaf—portfolios previously held by her late husband, with the exception of the Finance portfolio.

Leadership Vision and Priorities

Sunetra emphasized that she would move forward drawing strength from Ajit Pawar’s way of working, his decision-making abilities, and his close bond with the people. She stated that completing his unfinished dreams and doing justice to the expectations of farmers, women, youth, and common citizens would be her top priority.

She acknowledged that no one could replace Ajit Pawar, but she expressed her commitment to preserving his legacy and building a stronger and more capable Maharashtra. Her leadership vision is seen as a continuation of her husband’s policies, with a focus on inclusive development and social welfare.

Analysts say that Sunetra Pawar’s election as NCP president could have significant implications for the party’s future direction and its role in Maharashtra’s political landscape. With her husband’s strong base and her own political acumen, she is expected to play a key role in shaping the party’s agenda and strategy in the coming months.

The NCP’s next major challenge will be to maintain unity and coherence in the wake of Ajit Pawar’s death, while also addressing the pressing issues facing the state. With Sunetra Pawar at the helm, the party is likely to focus on consolidating its support base and strengthening its presence in the upcoming elections.
