Tom Ince has signed with Tranmere Rovers on a two-year contract, bringing him back to Merseyside after his recent departure from Watford, and the midfielder made the move official, calling it a ‘full circle’ in his career and expressing his excitement about the new chapter.

Return to Merseyside

Ince, 33, made 28 appearances for Watford last season, starting 11 times. He was a key figure under manager Javi Gracia, who valued his experience and tactical understanding of the game. However, under new coaches Paulo Pezzolano and Ed Still, his playing time diminished, and it was clear his contract would not be renewed beyond the summer.

Watford chairman Scott Duxbury praised Ince’s professionalism and influence in the dressing room. He said: ‘He has been fantastic, he’s a really good professional and he’s fantastic around the place. He gave his all in training and he’s probably one of the best training players we had, every coach said that to me.’

Tranmere’s View

Tranmere manager Darrell Clarke welcomed Ince as a ‘player who brings real quality and experience to the group.’ Clarke emphasized Ince’s ability to contribute in the final third with creativity, composure, and versatility, while also noting the value of his leadership for the club’s younger players.

Ince echoed these sentiments, saying: ‘It’s a great feeling, bit full circle for me. I’m looking forward to it. It’s always great when you come to a club like this. The good thing about it for me is that I have that hunger and that desire still.’

Tom Ince’s Career Highlights

Ince has enjoyed a varied career in English football. He started his professional journey with Liverpool in 2010 but made just one first-team appearance before loan spells with Notts County and Blackpool. His most productive period came with Blackpool between 2011 and 2014, where he made 100 league appearances and scored 28 goals.

He later played for Crystal Palace, Hull City, Nottingham Forest, Derby County, and Huddersfield Town. During his time at Derby, he made 105 league appearances and scored 37 goals. His most recent spell at Huddersfield saw him make 33 appearances but only two goals, indicating a shift in his role as a more experienced presence rather than a primary scorer.

Ince’s career statistics reflect a player who has consistently adapted to different roles and teams. According to the Japanese source サッカーキング, his most successful seasons were with Blackpool (2012–13, 18 goals in 44 games) and Derby County (2015,16, 12 goals in 42 games). Despite a dip in scoring form in recent seasons, his leadership and on-field intelligence have remained valuable assets.
